Suggestion: User's Forum Profiles

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m suggesting an idea towards user’s forum profiles- I mean the page you go to when you click on ‘Member’ underneath your own, or someone else’s, name on their forum post. Currently my list reads like this:

What’s the weirdest Search Engine Term used to find your site? You last replied: 7 hours ago. Most recent reply: 32 minutes ago
Promote Another Blog: Blogs You Read You last replied: 7 hours ago. Most recent reply: 2 hours ago
Answer a question, ask a question. You last replied: 7 hours ago. Most recent reply: 20 minutes ago…

    …and so on

I thought it might be an idea though to make this more user-friendly? Though of course I’m not sure if enough people even use the page and whether this idea would be popular, but I thought I’d give it a go (and would assume it would be relatively simple enough to do). I use it quite frequently myself, anyway, and that’s how I came up with the idea.

I would suggest that instead of having the posts numbered and in a sentence, as shown above, that there be a table format. For example, a column for all of the areas above: title of thread, last replied, most recent reply etc. but that there also be a clickable link to go to the user’s last reply. This would make it much easier to find replies after your most recent post, rather than clicking on the thread’s title and trawling through all of the pages to get to your last reply.

I apologise if there is already a way to do this, or there is another thread requesting the same thing but as far as I’m aware, I haven’t seen one! And this kind of thing would make it much easier to keep track of your forum post and would be more easy to read and navigate in a table form. :)

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Here’s my response. I am a Volunteer who has has been answering support forum questions for over 5 years on these forums. If the profile layout was changed as you suggest I believe the ability to function effectively as Volunteers answering support questions would be unnecessarily complicated.

As a volunteer, I look to see if someone I’m assisting has replied recently or another volunteer has added to my reply.

Are you aware that you can subscribe to a thread (Topic) so you will be notified of a new reply whenever it comes? That way you don’t have to trawl through the list of topics you have posted on to find the most recent answers to things of interest to you?

I don’t have time to type a full answer for you. I note that these support forum profiles are primarily used by Volunteers and Staff. They existed long before the social forums (Showcase and Off-Topic) existed. There are many ways we can follow other members and their blogs here. I don’t consider tracking which threads in the social forums (Showcase and Off-Topic) other members create and post into to be a priority for me except in the case of tracking and reporting spammers. I subscribe to a follow blogs. The lowest priority for me is hanging out in the social forums.

Good morning. The ability to subscribe to the RSS feed is something I completely overlooked sharing. We can also mark threads as favorites in the sidebar and I neglected to mention that too.

  • Unknown's avatar

Oh, I see what you both mean. The priority for the forums is mainly to answer other people’s questions than look for replies to your own. That’s cool :) This is the first time I’ve posted out side of the ‘social’ forums really, so I wasn’t aware. Thanks for the replies :)

I’m very happy to hear that you understand. Do try the subscription and RSS options: they will likely be very useful for you.
And if you need help with the wp software, then post in one of the other places: we volunteers are happy to assist with those things.

The priority for those posting to support forums is getting help with technical issues that hamper your ability to blog effectively on WordPress.com software. The priority for those answering the questions posted in support forum threads, is to provide correct answers and helpful information and workarounds that resolve issues wherever possible. When Volunteers cannot do that the bloggers who need help are directed to contact Staff by filing support tickets. :)

There are three ways to track threads provided in the sidebar of every thread whther posted into the support forums or the two social forums:
Add this topic to your favorites (?)
    Subscribe to Topic
    RSS feed for this topic

I think if your start using those you will find they are very handy. :)

The subscription and RSS options don’t really appeal to me- I have subscribed to threads before, but eventually my inbox gets clogged up, and it’s much easier to just come on WP and go on my forum profile anyway, so I shall continue to do this.

Just thought it would be worth posting the idea anyway, it wasn’t a criticism of the current system, just an idea. You guys know what you’re talking about so I’m grateful for your replies :)

    You’re welcome form me. :)

Yes, welcome from me as well.

Once you reach a thread, there is a link to the latest reply. But as a mod, I do understand that it’s not always easy to distinguish between topics you’ve already looked at and ones that still need a review.
