Suggestions and Questions

Lots of little suggestions. I really love WP overall. :)

It would be great if WP added the coding needed such that below the “share this” icons on blog posts, it would show the total number of hits that particular post had received. The same thing might be nice under the “top pages and posts” widget- below each link something like “x” hits last 24 hours of x total.

Also, I would enjoy knowing how many hits a typical blog gets (excluding business blogs like CNN, etc) in a day/year/etc.

The BBB editor needs to be disabled. It causes far too many problems and has far too many errors in it.

It would be great to know too more specifically WHAT Facebook page, for example, hits were coming from vs just the total from Facebook in general.

It would also be great if WP showed for any given blog posts how many hits came from Facebook etc vs. just the general number from Facebook, search engines, etc.

It would also be great if WP used some kind of “smart tags” when following tags in the main WP reader. For example, if it combined tags “historical memory” and “cultural memory” OR “open letter” and “open letters.”

I would also enjoy knowing quickly the countries that had zero hits to my page for a given period, year, all time, etc.

For visits, does WP use cookies or IP address? If it is “cookies,” it wouldn’t be as true of a number. Just curious about this one. I mainly follow the number of hits only.

    Thanks!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Andrew,

Thanks for all of this feedback! To make sure I don’t miss anything, I’ll respond to each suggestion separately:

It would be great if WP added the coding needed such that below the “share this” icons on blog posts, it would show the total number of hits that particular post had received. The same thing might be nice under the “top pages and posts” widget- below each link something like “x” hits last 24 hours of x total.

Do you mean the total all-time views that post has received, regardless of where the view came from, or total number of views related to each of those sharing icons (so total views that came from Twitter, total from Facebook, etc.)? It’s an interesting idea, and I just want to be sure I understand the suggestion before I pass it on. :)

Also, I would enjoy knowing how many hits a typical blog gets (excluding business blogs like CNN, etc) in a day/year/etc.

Cool idea! It may be hard to define the “typical” blog, since there are so many different blogs being used in different ways on WordPress.com. How would you see yourself using a stat like that?

The BBB editor needs to be disabled. It causes far too many problems and has far too many errors in it.

Our team is continuing to work on developing the editor at https://wordpress.com/post and fixing the issues that have been reported there. There are no plans to disable or retire it. If you prefer the WP Admin editor, you can continue using it directly from your WP Admin dashboard. (I know that’s likely not the answer you want to hear, but I want to be honest about our team’s plans for the editors.)

It would be great to know too more specifically WHAT Facebook page, for example, hits were coming from vs just the total from Facebook in general.

Unfortunately, Facebook doesn’t share that information, so WordPress.com doesn’t have any way to know exactly where on Facebook visits and views come from. The only information WordPress.com receives is that Facebook is the referrer.

It would also be great if WP used some kind of “smart tags” when following tags in the main WP reader. For example, if it combined tags “historical memory” and “cultural memory” OR “open letter” and “open letters.”

Great idea! I’ll pass that along to our team so they can think about how a “smart tag” or “similar tag” feature could be developed. :)

I would also enjoy knowing quickly the countries that had zero hits to my page for a given period, year, all time, etc.

If a country isn’t listed in the Countries module for the period of time you’re looking at, that means it has zero hits for that period.

For visits, does WP use cookies or IP address? If it is “cookies,” it wouldn’t be as true of a number. Just curious about this one. I mainly follow the number of hits only.

WordPress.com doesn’t use cookies to track the number of visitors to your site, so that stat wouldn’t be affected by someone clearing their browser cookies. :)

Thanks for your reply, and sorry for the delayed followup.

For the first thing, yes, I’m thinking something that would show the total hits said posts had gotten all together regardless of source. So the same information I can see in stats. For example, this post (http://andrewpegoda.com/2013/06/20/15-things-i-wish-i-knew-before-starting-graduate-school/) has gotten 34,013 hits so far and if it said that in the general area where “likes” and the “share” icons are that would be nice.

For sure hard to define typical blog. I would just enjoy knowing how many hits my blog gets compared to other blogs run by individuals.

For the countries, it would just be nice if it listed a 0 for countries without any visitors, especially as there are so many countries and no way to quickly know where visitors aren’t coming at all. Not a big deal. I’m a few countries away from having at least one visitor from each.

Thanks for the help and information. :)

  • I’ve passed the “display all hits by post” suggestion along for you. It sounds like you’re just about covered on the countries idea, but I’ve submitted that suggestion a well.

Stats for blogs run by individuals can still vary widely depending on a number of factors, making it very difficult to define a typical blog. So we would encourage you to compare to your own previous stats instead.
