'Summary Graphic'

  I was hoping you could tell me how I can create what I’m calling a ‘summary graphic’ — an images that appears if the blogs are bulleted or on WordPress’ featured blogs. It seems WordPress automatically decides what image it wants to be my ‘summary’ but there is not consistent form — sometimes it is the first image, sometimes the middle and others the end. How can I pick which image I want shown?
  I saw the ‘Featured Image’ link, but I did not like that because it placed that image at the top of my blog post. I just want the image there for the sake of a summary of the blog.
