Summary of Posts on Homepage
-
On the homage of my site, I would like to put my most recent 4-5 posts, but listed as a summary/snipit as opposed to the full text. I have selected “summary” in Settings, Reading instead of the “full text” option. But it is not changing it on my site, and I have cleared cache and things like that. Help!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

@eraflowitz
The option you set refers to how your posts look in a feed:

To address your issue, you will need to insert a More tag where you’d like your abbreviated text to end:

Great! Thanks so much. I would like to have a picture/feature image next to each of those posts. I have a featured image selected, but nothing appears. Do I need a different template for the website? Or is there a way to add in those pictures with my current template?

@eraflowitz
If you want each post’s Featured Image to appear on your site’s Posts page, you will need to select a different theme:
For Twenty Eleven, to have a post’s Featured Image appear on the individual post page, you will need to make sure that it is at least 1000×288 pixels.
To have a big featured image you need to use an image that is at least as big as the header image (1000px x 288px). Also, make sure you have a set size for Large image under Settings → Media that allows for such sizes.

Okay thank you. I was thinking of updating my theme anyways. Is there a way to create the theme, without it becoming live on the website instantly? So I have time to update the appropriate featured images?

@eraflowitz
There are at least 2 different ways you can go about this:
- Use the Preview function to check out a post before you update it.
- If there are multiple posts you’d like to simultaneously preview, set your site’s visibility to Private while you’re testing this functionality, then turn it back to Public once you’re done.

@eraflowitz
I apologize.
You can preview a theme before you decide to activate it:
Setting the site’s visibility to Private while you test is still an option, as well.

No worries. Yes, I am familiar with the preview, but it does not allow you to completed edit the entire website to prepare for a new launch. (For example the “Port” theme I choose, you have to create projects, etc. to have them featured on the homepage as shown.
I am wondering if there is a way I can edit my website with the new theme while keeping the old template live, and then once all pieces are ready to go, I can switch the themes.

@eraflowitz
You can create another WordPress.com site, import your content from elizabethraflowitz.wordpress.com, and I can transfer over your Premium Theme, Port.
You can get it set up as you like. Then, when you’re ready to make it go live, I can re-associate your custom domains (elizabethraflowitzblog.com, elizabethraflowitz.com) with the new site.
Let me know if that works for you :-)
