Summary vs. Full post in feed

    Do you think there are any disadvantages to using a summary over a full post in the RSS Feed? Do to a copyright infringement, I’ve changed my RSS feed to summary, but wonder if this has any drawbacks. I don’t know that the copyright infringement was due to the RSS feed, but using a summary is one recommendation in the WP copyright support page, if I recall correctly.

    Thanks!

    <blockqyote> Do you think there are any disadvantages to using a summary over a full post in the RSS Feed?

    Bloggers have been debating this for years. Some seem to think that setting up full feeds is the best choice as they believe that subscribers will be turned off by not getting the whole post and will be less likely to subscribe at all. This argument held great weight prior to the advent of social media (Twitter, etc.) which provided an alternative for notification of publication of a post.

    The opposing POV is that setting up summary feeds is the best choice because it encourages interested subscribers to click into the blog (a hit stat) and read the rest of the post and comment.

    Those who share this POV also point out that setting up full feeds simply means one has to spend more time and energy tracking down the splogs on which their scraped content is appearing and having it removed by making DMCA complaints.

    As you are and I are using Inuit Types and the them is code so that all the posts are automatically truncated it doesn’t matter because what’s going out on the feed is thr “summary” and not the full posts.

    @Sandra
    I apologize for the typos and missing words. I’m having a bad vision day today. Sorry. :(

    Sorry for your bad vision day. Hope it gets better.

    That’s really interesting to know about Inuit Types. I would never have figured that out on my own. I did notice that the email updates I get from your site are the summary versions, but I didn’t connect it with the fact you use the Inuit Types theme.

    Even before I used this theme I chose to reduce my RSS feeds to “summary”. I probably lost some subscribers by doing so. However, I no longer had to spend my time and energy tracing the sploggers who use blog scrapers to fill their splogs with stolen content.

    Also note that is you place an excerpt in the excerpt box of the Inuit Types theme it will display on the front page, rather that the first part of the post. Also note on this theme that if the text breaks automatically at a point you don’t like such as in the middle of a sentence, you can edit the post and remove the automatically supplied “more” tag and then place “the more tag” at the end of the sentence.
