    Hello,

    I am considering this theme from a third party developer ;

    http://www.elegantthemes.com/gallery/foxy/

I am completely new to wordpress. I just signed up like an hour ago with a FREE account.

I am a bit confused because when I tried to download a free theme somewhere online (just to poke around wordpress and mess with it before purchasing a good theme from elegantthemes.com) and It was just a folder with files in it.

I watched a few youtube tutorials about how to upload themes and in my themes tab there was no upload….

Do I have to purchase a premium account or a domain name through wordpress to be able to install/upload elegantthemes.com themes?

I am lost and afraid to buy the theme if I dont even know how to install it…

I am not a fan of the free themes. Its for my business and my page isn’t going to be a blog but a regular site like the theme link above.

    What do I do?

    Mike

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Well, let’s make this simple: You cannot use this theme. You cannot upload external themes to a WordPress.com blog; they are only for WordPress.ORG blogs. There is no upgrade you can purchase that changes this, other than the $2600 per month VIP plan like CNN.com has.

It’s part of our security requirements that things like themes and plugins cannot be used here.

We do have 200 or so themes; most of them are free, but some are premium. And we have the Custom Design upgrade for $30 a year if you feel like you can improve on existing designs by changing the look and feel.

Just to provide some details to raincoaster’s post, there are different kinds of wordpress which you can read about and make decisions here:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

So the whole reason I am building a site is to use the SEO plugin that Yoast made.

    yoast.com

    I can’t use that in WP.COM?

    :(

    No, not on wordpress.com.
wp.com has excellent SEO built in if you learn how to use tags and categories properly.

If you were a client who wanted to be in control of her/his web presence and learn about a do-it-yourself approach to starting a site, my advice would be to set up a free blog on wp.com, use the learn wordpress tutorial (http://learn.wordpress.com/ ) and experiment with various themes here for free.

WordPress.com can certainly accommodate a “regular” website with only static pages. Your site does not have to be a blog at all.

Even if you don’t decide to use wp.com for your business, if you do a few experiments with free sites here then you will have a better way to judge how someone your hire would work. And keep in mind that if something goes wrong on a self-hosted site, you are the one who will have to fix the problems. From experiences I wish I’d skipped: that is my personal opinion and advice.

Also to avoid many gut-wrenching headaches (is that possible) you should know that you can use domain mapping so your site won’t have the “.wordpress.com/” designation, and you can upgrade as well for custom style sheets. Your site need not look like anyone else’s site.

I have used that plugin. It did not very much for me at all: the SEO here is better, and they do NOT pay me to say that.
