Support for a charity

  • Unknown's avatar

I am wondering if WordPress would be willing to offer free assistance to my new blog (www.shareyourfare.wordpress.com). I am looking into supporting a different charity each week (starting in March) by encouraging people to ride their bike to work, and to donate a percentage of the money they save from public transport.

If you would be interested, I initially would like my page to be ad free, and to remove wordpress from the domain. I am more than happy to have ‘A fine WordPress.com site’ at the top of the page, which will obviously promote WordPress.com. Apart from that, I feel as though I would not require too much further input, and feel as though this site will be popular in Melbourne, and it certainly has potential to grow to other cities.

Please let me know your thoughts, and I look forward to hearing from you

Your site is being hosted for free on WordPress.com. But they are a business which needs to generate some income in order to provide the service to you.

…would like my page to be ad free…

    Please understand:
    from http://en.support.wordpress.com/no-ads/

At WordPress.com, we sometimes display advertisements on your blog to help pay the bills. This keeps free features free!

To eliminate ads on your blog entirely, you can purchase the No-Ads Upgrade. The upgrade is especially attractive and useful to business
blogs in order to eliminate any possibility of competitors’ ads displaying on their domains.

The No-Ads Upgrade costs $30.00 per blog, per year.

…and to remove wordpress from the domain.

If you need to remove the “wordpress.com” part from your domain name, then you will need an upgrade to make it happen:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

Please note also that you must retain the attribution for WordPress.com in your footer. This is noted in the Terms of Service you agreed to when you decided to use this platform:

    11. Attribution. Automattic reserves the right to display attribution links such as ‘Blog at WordPress.com,’ theme author, and font attribution in your blog footer or toolbar. Footer credits and the WordPress.com toolbar may not be altered or removed regardless of upgrades purchased.

If these conditions do not work for you, then please read about the alternative to this free-hosted platform, ie self hosting your site, buying your own domain name, and the option to use free software from wp.ORG.
Details about the differences between wp.COM and wp.ORG are explained here:

Please note that I don’t intend to sound harsh, but as a volunteer here I want to give you accurate information so that you can make your decisions rationally.

I have worked for not-for-profit companies for many years and completely understand how tight money can be. I’ve also used the free hosting on WordPress.com to promote the places I’ve supported. And the service has proven to be very satisfactory.

Best wishes on your new project!

There IS a WordPress Foundation. I suggest you direct inquiries to that entity.
