Hello,
Yesterday I purchased the domain genderedresistancelab.com on WordPress.com but requested a refund shortly after. The refund was processed, and the domain no longer appears under “My Purchases.”
Support informed me that the domain is in a “pending cancel” status, which is why WHOIS shows it as unavailable. However, I still need this domain for my project, and I want to make sure I don’t lose it when it becomes available again.
Could a Happiness Engineer confirm:
Roughly how long the “pending cancel” status usually lasts before the domain is released back for registration.
Whether there is any way to be notified (or to request a manual release) so I can re-register the domain as soon as possible.
Whether I should keep my WordPress.com account active until the process is complete.
I’m moving my site to Bluehost and just want to secure the domain again as quickly as possible.

Deleting a domain when you want to use it elsewhere is the wrong way to do. A deleted domain isn’t released immediately and chances are high you won’t be able to reuse it.
You just have to wait for a Staff member and hopefully they can recover it.

When a domain is cancelled, it goes through several stages (pending cancel, redemption, etc.) before it’s eventually released back to the public for registration. During this time, there’s no guarantee it will become available again — another person could purchase it once it’s released.
The best way to secure the domain is to restore it with us. Once restored, you can update the name servers to point to Bluehost while the domain remains in your control. Later, when the transfer option becomes available, you can move it to your preferred registrar.
