Suspicious emails from WordPress regarding new followers
-
Recently, I’ve been getting suspicious emails from WordPress informing me about new followers of my blog. All the emails were from outlook.com domain. When I checked my site’s statistics, it turned out I haven’t had any traffic recently and the emails are not among my followers. Please check it on your end, as I don’t want to be spammed like this.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hey there,
Outlook.com spam is an issue that we are in the process of addressing. I have reported internally that this is affecting your account, and we’ll get it cleaned up soon for you ASAP.
Thank you!

I too have received “new follower” spam from accounts that end with “outlook.com”. Can you add my website ( http://www.daabsentee.com ) to the list to be reviewed. Thanks

I too! I wondered how legitimate they were as they are usually a confused mash of letters :)

I too have been receiving daily emails to inform me of ‘new followers’, though as other users have stated, the math doesn’t add up! Could you please have a look at dearkayblog.wordpress.com for me?

dearkayblog – Are these followers signing up with a WordPress.com user account or an email account?

Me too! https://guidedword.wordpress.com/ for about a week and https://isabelmartinventura.com/ started 2 days ago. Thank you. All outlook signups.

I have received 18 new “followers” since March 24 on my site which has not been updated for several months. They are all outlook.com addresses and do not show up on my site under followers or email followers. Is there anything I can do to stop this?
-
I have too! I received emails saying I have 3 supposed new followers and ‘they’ all have an outlook.com email. I just realized this is the reason why I was confused about my follower count.
Could you review my blog? https://thewritingworm626351107.wordpress.com

As staff have already indicated in this thread, they are removing the suspect followers for you. That is why you don’t see them in your People/Email Followers dashboard.
Until this current wave is over, you can turn off notifications of these new followers by changing your settings here: https://wordpress.com/me/notifications Click the arrow on the right and uncheck the box next to Site follows > Email.

I know i was already on the list; but since my initial comment. I believe the problem was fixed. Since then more “outlook.com” followers have cropped up.

Hi –
Do you see them at My Sites – People – Followers – Email Followers? If not, our filters have removed them already.
-
Thank you, WordPress Staff for removing them. I have also turned off notifications for the time being. Will we be notified when the issue has been resolved?

olaswiderek – As a temporary work around you can try to remove the follow button for a few days. OR you can set up a filter in your email program that will automatically pull those in to a separate folder, even the trash.
