SVG support?
-
I’d like it very much if WordPress.com allowed a bit wider range of different image file formats. Specifically, scalable vector graphics is something I’ve been working with lately, and would like to see implemented here as well. SVG files are becoming supported by browsers, and it’s the best vector graphics format for the internet that I know of. The mere fact that it is a vector format as opposed to bitmap graphics makes it very useful for many different purposes where bitmaps do not serve so well. I’ve only held a blog here for under two months, but I’ve already felt the lack of vector graphics capability a couple of times.

If you would like to make staff aware of your request then during support hours (9 – 5PM Pacific time) on weekdays you can use this link to do that http://wordpress.com/contact-support/

Is WP.com somehow disabling SVG? I wasn’t aware of that, I thought that it all came down to your browser, those that support it will show it, those that don’t won’t

If by allowing .svg as an upload, we will check into the security aspects. I won’t pretend it will be quick as we have to be absolutely certain there are no risks.
If it is something else then I don’t understand.

I just tried to upload a svg file and got this message:
File type does not meet security guidelines. Try another.
But even if you got permission to upload it you’d still have the problem of many visitors not being able to see them because of their old browser(s). It would be nice if people could upload them though, so we can share because svg time is definitely coming. I doubt there are security issues there, but I’ll ask around…
Im not an expert but I think youd need to have xml declared webpage to be able to display svg files inside the page itself, and I doubt WP or anyone else will consider changing their code in that direction anytime soon (because having xml declaration, or anything else for that matter, in front of the html declaration totally borks IE). We’ll have to be satisfied with just displaying pure “standalone” svg in browsers that support it, for now at least.
