Swapping accounts etc.

    Hello,
I need some help on swapping accounts. I’ll use fictions names in place of the real ones.
    I initially set up an account using ‘Happy Dogs’ as the domain name, then thought it best to use my business name, ‘Crazy Dogs’, so instead of changing the original name, I somehow created a second account. After much discussion with a marketing friend, I’ve decided that I want to stick with name ‘Happy Dogs’ but now I have all my drafts in the ‘Crazy Dogs’ account. My questions are: 1) How do I transfer my one published post with it’s comments, along with all my drafts to ‘Happy Dogs’ and;
    2) Can I temporarily deactivate the ‘Crazy Dogs’ account and activate the ‘Happy Dogs’ account instead and how do I do that.
    3) Is there any help available directly from the WordPress creators?
I’m really, really knew at blogging and WordPress, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks
    Silvi

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there.

    1) How do I transfer my one published post with it’s comments, along with all my drafts to ‘Happy Dogs’

Are you speaking of two different accounts (i.e. usernames) or two different blogs? If you use only one email to log in and can then access both sites, you only have one account.

Please confirm which of these it is, then I can give you the correct advice going forward. Also please give the addresses of the specific blogs. You only provide the address for the wisdomelements blog, which appears to be unrelated to your question.

    2) Can I temporarily deactivate the ‘Crazy Dogs’ account and activate the ‘Happy Dogs’ account instead and how do I do that.

It is not possible to deactivate accounts at WordPress.com, but again, if you’re speaking of two blogs rather than two accounts there are other options.

    3) Is there any help available directly from the WordPress creators?

If you have a free account this forum is what you have. Don’t worry, though. There’s a bunch of us volunteers here who can help you, and anyone can request staff help at any time by adding “modlook” to the tags area to the right.

Answer my first question above and I’ll try my best to help you. And if we get stuck, we just call in staff to help. Keep in mind you’ll have to make most of the changes yourself either way.

Hi Kokkieh, Thanks for offering to help me. I’ll do my best to answer your question. OK, I now realise that I have the one account because when I logged in again, I could see I have two sites. My other site is called aspiritedgirl.wordpress.com which at present is a blank site but the one I created originally.
Then I created the second site, still using A Spirited Girl as the blog title, but changed the URL to wisdomelements to match my business name but realise this is not a great idea. So now, I want to transfer my one posted blog and comments, and all my drafts over to the aspiritedgirl.wordpress site, and to have this as my primary address. I hope that all makes sense. Thanks again for your help. I really appreciate it. S :-)

  • Okay. In this case you’ll have to manually transfer your content from the one site to the other, but it’s very simple.

Go to the dashboard of the wisdomelements site: https://wisdomelements.wordpress.com/wp-admin/ Click on Tools ->Export. Follow the instructions to create an XML export file of your content: https://en.support.wordpress.com/export/

Then you go to the dashboard of the other site: https://aspiritedgirl.wordpress.com/wp-admin/ Click on Tools ->Import and follow the instructions to import the XML file you’d just exported from the other site: https://en.support.wordpress.com/import/

And that’s it. The import should go quickly as you have very little content. However, this will ONLY transfer your content (posts, pages, comments, and any embedded images). Your theme and widgets will not transfer, so you’ll have to set those up anew on the other site.

Your followers, if you already have some, will not transfer either, but staff can move them over for you. Just let us know if you want to do that.

Lastly, once everything has been moved over, I’d recommend you set https://wisdomelements.wordpress.com/ to private (unless you want to use it for a different site). Deleting is permanent and you’ll never be able to use that address again. If you set it to private instead, you can use it as a test blog to try out new themes, or as a backup for your main blog. To set it to private, go to Settings ->Reading in the dashboard: https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

Let me know if you run into any snags with this process, and also if you need help with anything else :)

Hi Kokkieh, can I ask a different question? I published a new post today and tried to share it on my Facebook page and while the link loaded and is active, the image box was empty, and yet when I added it to my FB work page, when it loaded, it asked me to add an image which I downloaded from my desktop. Any ideas why it’s not working properly? My FB work page is also called Wisdom Elements. Many thanks. S

  • When you post a link to Facebook, Facebook then searches at that link for an image to use with the post preview. For some reason sometimes it won’t display any image in spite of there being images in the post. This is an issue on Facebook’s side, and our options to fix it from this side are limited, but there are a few things you can try.

First, upload a favicon or blavatar for your blog. The favicon is the icon that appears in the browser tab when you view a site, and failing to find another image, Facebook will usually display that image with shared links. You can upload this image from Settings ->General in the WP-Admin dashboard: https://en.support.wordpress.com/blavatars/

The support doc says the image should be at least 128x128pixels large, but use an image at least 500×500 instead to make sure Facebook sees it.

Second, if you set a featured image for a post Facebook is more likely to display that image.

Lastly, Facebook caches images connected to your URL so it doesn’t have to fetch them every time. Clearing your Facebook cache will force it to go looking for new images next time you share a link. See here for more details: https://en.support.wordpress.com/facebook-image-thumbnail/

kookier you are a gem. How many questions can I ask you, because I have another? Tell me if you tire of answering. When I view my post, it always has the black header with the W symbol and My Sites followed by the word Reader at the top. This is the dashboard area right? When I “view” my posts with this black header up the top, am I seeing the post exactly how other see it? I ask because I seem to have categories showing at the top of my posts when in fact, I’d like them on the side, as well as the word “edit”. How do I move them? And are they showing up when other people look at the post or am I the only one who can see them? Thanks so much again. :-)

As long as my internet keeps working, ask away. If you throw something at me I can’t handle, we just call in Staff to help :)

This is the WordPress.com toolbar or admin bar. Only people logged in to WordPress.com can see that, and each person will see their own My Sites page when they click on that link.

When we speak of the dashboard it’s the My Sites page, also called the New Dashboard, or the WP-Admin dashboard, also called the classic dash. Personally I prefer the classic dash, as the My Sites page don’t have all the functions available. It’s basically a simplified dashboard for less “techy” people :)

I seem to have categories showing at the top of my posts when in fact, I’d like them on the side, as well as the word “edit”. How do I move them? And are they showing up when other people look at the post or am I the only one who can see them?

The categories and tags are visible to everyone. This is determined by your theme and the only way to hide or reposition them is by editing your theme’s CSS. You need the Premium or Business upgrade to do that. http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/editing-css/

The edit link is visible only to you, and only if you’re logged into your account. It’s there to make it easier to edit posts without having to go to the dashboard first, so while you can remove it with CSS it’s both unnecessary and will actually make the site less functional for you.

Let me know if you want more information about making those changes with CSS.

Now I have a question: Have you decided to stick with the wisdomelements URL? Because I see your username still links to the aspiritedgirl URL. To change that, change the web address field in your account settings, here: https://wordpress.com/me/account

Kokkhie, you are the best! Thanks for all your help and yes, after all that messing around, I decided to stick with wisdomelements and have made the necessary changes. Thank you sooo much. Silvana :-)

  • You are very welcome :)

I can confirm your username now links to the correct blog, so you’re all set. If you need more help in future, you know where to come.
