SWAPPING BLOG NAMES

    Hi

    I have two wordpress blogs, one is live the other is dormant. I want to change the names of the blogs/ swap them over. How can I do this?

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    This is not as easy as it looks. At first I thought that you could just export each blog, delete the contents, and import blog A into B and vice versa. But if you do that you will lose all images – as these are pulled from an existing blog rather than an export file.

    Then I thought of using the rename blog functionality to name blog A to TEMP, B to A, then TEMP to B. This might work, but I don’t know if you can rename to an address you are keeping. Only do this after testing, and make sure it works and on NO ACCOUNT select the “discard current address” option.

    This is the only safe procedure that I can think of:

    1. Export both blogs
    2. Create a new blog TEMP

      3. Import the contents of blog A to TEMP.

    3. Wait until all images are imported into TEMP. This could take 48 hours.
    4. Delete all the contents of blog A.
    5. Import the contents of blog B into Blog A.
    6. Wait until all images are imported into blog A.
    7. Delete the contents of blog B
    8. Import the contents of blog TEMP into blog B
    9. Adjust themes, widgets etc. to match the blogs
    10. At a later time, when all images are in blog B you can delete the TEMP blog, or mark it as private in case you want to do this again.

    Since this is a complex process that I have not tried I have marked it for staff attention. They may have a better idea or see a problem with my instructions.

    A couple of notes and observations & questions

    1) http://marcellajeanblog.wordpress.com/ – is in violation of the Terms of Service and can be suspended at any time – you have removed the footer credits – not allowed at all

    Current Terms of Service:

    11. Attribution. Automattic reserves the right to display attribution links such as ‘Blog at WordPress.com,’ theme author, and font attribution in your blog footer or toolbar. Footer credits and the WordPress.com toolbar may not be altered or removed regardless of upgrades purchased.

    The current policy about the footer in the support documentation:

    May I remove the ‘Blog at WordPress.com’ credit in my site’s footer?
    Although the Custom Design Upgrade certainly grants you the capability to hide the credit from your site’s footer, you are not permitted to do so. Even our VIP bloggers are required to maintain the credit.

    2) When you say “Swap” does that really mean just move all the content from marcellajeanblog.wordpress.com. to marcellajeaninteriors (it is empty) and start using marcellajeaninteriors as your main site?

    If so – then using the instructions above – Export from marcellajeanblog.wordpress.com and import into marcellajeaninteriors – put a new Post asking your followers to subscribe to the new blog – buy a site redirect to send search engine traffic & links etc. to the new address – set the old Posts to “Private” (in same box as Publish & Update) that just makes them so they can’t be seen by the public – then put a Post that says you have moved with a link to the new site – so after a year when the Site Redirect goes away any visitor that shows up at the old blog will have a link to the new blog where you are at
