swapping domains

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve had a WordPress.com blog for years (jenniecreates.com) and now I’ve created a WordPress.org site but want to keep the same domain. I probably did this out of order, but it’s too late to turn back! My .org site is jenniecreatesphotography.com, but I want to stay with jenniecreates.com. It’s simple and already has a following. Once I make the swap, I will let the .com site fall back to the standard, free version and simply re-direct all traffic to the .org. I do not want to delete the .com site.

Is this something WordPress can help me with? Or do I need to contact GoDaddy? As you can probably tell, I’m learning this stuff as I go.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there!

As a first step, set your Primary domain to the free url at your My Domains settings:

    https://wordpress.com/my-domains/

This will make sure your readers view your free site and it won’t ever be “invisible” while we make these DNS changes.

Next, since you’ve registered the domain jenniecreates.com domain name through GoDaddy, and just mapped it to WordPress.com, you can point the domain to your .org site instead of WordPress.com by changing its name servers. GoDaddy has instructions on how to do that here:

    https://support.godaddy.com/help/article/664/setting-nameservers-for-your-domain-names

Once you’ve made the adjustments at GoDaddy, both your domains jenniecreates.com and jenniecreatesphotography.com will point to your .org site.

When you’ve completed that, let me know, and I’ll remove the domain mapping on your WordPress.com site as well to make sure it doesn’t accidentally get set again.

    Best,

    -Alex G.

I think I got everything moved over correctly. Is there a way you can check it to make sure? Thank you!

Looks good to me! Your free site is running, and jenniecreates.com points to your self-hosted site.

Since you no longer need the mapping upgrade at WordPress.com, I’ve removed it for clarity’s sake. You still have your premium upgrade, which you can check out here:

Let me know if I can help with anything else here at WordPress.com. :)

For help on the .org site, make sure to check out the Documentation and Support forums there:

    Best,

    -Alex G.
