Switch from "them" to you…quietly.

I’d like to pull an already existing website from Blue Host to WordPress. How can I “build” the website on WordPress without disturbing the old site until I’m ready for the switch?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there!

    That isn’t a problem. Welcome :)

I do need some details from you and then I can help you devise a plan:

    1. Are you currently using a custom domain name? If so, will you be maintaining that domain with your WordPress site? If not, will you be registering a new domain for your WordPress.com site?

    2. Will you need your content from Blue Host to transfer to your WordPress site? If so, you’ll need to export from Blue Host, and import into WordPress.com:

    Import a Website

    3. I am assuming you’re running a WordPress site at Blue Host, is this correct? Here is transfer information:

    4. Are you aware of the differences between maintaining at WordPress.com site and a self-hosted instance via WordPress.org? The link below outlines the details. Let me know if you have questions:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

    This is a good start.

Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks very much.

    Hi, Robyn!

Thanks for your reply. The situation is I own corey-wright.net that I purchased with Just Host and I’m using Blue Host to build the site. Currently, WordPress isn’t in the picture. I have two blogs with WordPress and love the layouts and the simplicity involved in building, but the chic-ness of it WITH so many options. I’d like to use WordPress to rebuild the site.

There IS some content that I’d like to keep from BlueHost.

Does that make more sense? Sorry if I was unclear before. I’ll start clicking around these links to see if I can come up with something.

    Thanks again for getting back!

    -Corey

I should also mention that I want this to be a full-out website…not just a blog.

Hello there, all of this is completely doable. Those links I provided should walk you through. Once you’ve built your site at WordPress.com, we can help with any transfer issues that might arise. Wishing you all the best with the secret move :)

    Cool.

And — maybe I missed this…I apologize if I did — how do I build the site via wordpress and keep my other one active without having “coming soon” downtime?

To create your new site here, log in to your account, go to My Blogs, and then Create a New Blog.

After you create the site, which will have a XXXXXX.wordpress.com domain, you can keep it hidden from the public while you’re building. Change your Privacy Settings via your Settings → Reading page.

Once the blog is built, you can make it public.

Will be using the same domain name you have at BlueHost? If so, when your WordPress.com blog is ready, it can be mapped to the existing name.

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/#instructions-for-mapping-an-existing-domain

I hope this gives you a good start. Let me know if you have other questions!
