Switch Hosting from Bluehost back to WP.com?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello! I have been hosting my WP.com site externally through bluehost, but am trying to come back to just hosting at WP.com. I am keeping my domain with BH and already have mapping purchased and set up through WP.com. I am worried by canceling my BH hosting account, something terrible might happen to my website. If I cancel with BH, will WP.com automatically pick up the hosting on my account? *I already have domain mapping set up from BH to WP.com. The BH people said I have to do something with the DNS mapping after I cancel my account with them. What does this mean if I already have the domain mapping done? Thanks for help!

Your site won’t move to us automatically, no.

First, you’ll need to export your site’s content from Bluehost, and then import it to us. Only once that is done should you change your DNS to point your domain to us and cancel your hosting with Bluehost.

Hello! Thanks! I never moved to WordPress.org, I’m still at WordPress.com. I don’t think I need to don’t transfer, right? I have just been hosting WordPress.com at blue host, which is unnecessary because I can do it for free at WordPress.com, which is why I’m cancelling w Blue host. I had thought I’d go over to wp.org, but I never did. Thanks!

    *do a transfer, I meant…

  • It looks like we have a confusion of terminology. Easy where domains are concerned :)

I have just been hosting WordPress.com at blue host

Your site at stambergeroutreach.com is not hosted at Bluehost. That domain is registered at Bluehost, but the site is hosted with us. Hosting means your site’s files are on our servers, not at bluehost’s. If your site was hosted with Bluehost, it would have been using WordPress.org, not .com.

If you are paying Bluehost for hosting, then you can cancel that, as they’re not hosting your site. But please don’t cancel your domain with them. If you do that you will no longer own the domain and it will stop working. Your site with us will still be safe, but you won’t have the domain stambergeroutreach.com any more.

If you actually want to cancel your domain, then your site will just automatically go back to using the free address, http://stambergeroutreach.wordpress.com/, that it had before you bought the domain.

I hope that clarifies things :)

Yay, that’s so great! That’s exactly what I wanted to know! Frustrating that I’ve been paying blue host for nothing for a couple of years. I will cancel my hosting through them but have already renewed and plan to keep my domain through them and map it to WordPress. Thanks so much!!

  • Glad I could help :)

I just wanted to add to this topic as I’m in a similar situation, I switched from a Bluehost self-hosted site back to wordpress.com, I exported my site, mapped my domain cookbookaficionado.com, updated the name servers and cancelled my account with Bluehost. My Bluehost account expired a few days ago and now I’m getting DNS configuration errors, since my site was cancelled with Bluehost, they’ve overridden the name servers. If I’ve already moved everything over to wordpress.com, do I still need to do anything about the configuration errors? Thanks.

  • @cookbookaficionado

Bluehost is your domain registrar, meaning you have to pay them for ownership of your domain. You don’t need to pay them for hosting, but if you don’t renew the domain with them it will expire and stop working. It looks like that happened on 8 September, but it looks like you also renewed it yesterday and it’s working again.

Let me know if you have any questions about this.
