Switch to .org? Did I waste my money?

  Hello. I recently signed up for the wordpress.com blog, and paid the 25 dollars to get my custom “.com” name and privacy fee. Then, in an attempt to customize my blog I paid ANOTHER 30 bucks for the font thing.

  Now I am really starting to see that the only way I can truly customize it like I want is to pay a web host and download the wordpress.org software. If I do that will I still be able to use my http://www.secondhandgarden.com address? Is the 55 dollars I just spent basically a waste?

  The “font thing” has a 30 day refund window so as long as you are inside that no problem

  You can change the domain name to point to new name servers (your new host) – so again not wasted. Don’t do a refund on the name (it only has a 48 hour window ) because you might not get the domain name back and it can take two months in some cases for the domain name to revert back to the wild and someone else can grab it.

  So no money wasted.

  Im sorry, I am so new at this. To clarify: after I get a web host (thats who you pay monthly right?) and set up the wordpress.org software, I can then have the domain name from here (.com) point to the webhost and it will show my new .org blog at the old address? Do I need to delete the old blog?

  Oh, and I just bought the “font thing” today so I will reverse that, thanks!

  that is correct –

  Do I need to delete the old blog?

  Not really – once a name is deleted it is gone forever even from you

  If you moved all the content so your new .ORG install is a mirror then you can either do domain forwarding to send all your old site traffic to the new site – but if your blog is new probably not worth the money – either set the old WordPress.COM site to “Private” or delete the content (not the blog) and put a note on the front page “I have moved to a new place”
