I use HostGator but am not happy – I want to switch to WordPress for hosting and keep my current platform. How do I do this?

    Hi there:

If you want to transfer your site to WordPress.com, we have a great guide here that will show you the different options you have available to move your site to us:

    https://transferto.wordpress.com/self-hosted-wordpress-org/

Also, if you have an existing domain name that you also want to use here, you would need one of our paid plans. You can review the different plan levels and features here:

I use WordPress already – I have a domain name and have it in WordPress.com but use HostGator which has done nothing for me. I don’t find it helpful and do most of my site building on WordPress so I think I should just use WordPress as my host – does this make sense? How do I do this? Email me and I can give you my domain name and you can see what I mean.

  • Is your site still in “Coming Soon” mode with the host? If so we wouldn’t be able to see it.

For what it’s worth, though, typically the site would look the same regardless of the host, but we’d be able to provide support, security, and maintenance for you if you use our services.

If you’re looking for help with making the site look better, too, we currently recommend this resource. Or, depending on what you need, a quick start session may help:

In fact, sometimes just changing themes is a good start.

How do I switch everything to wordpress? my year long subscription to hostgator including my domain name ends in april so I really I want to get out before it renews. Do I just sign up with wordpress with a plan and start from there? and yes – I am pretty sure I will do quick start session. But I want to make sure I have switched over first before I do a session.

  • Hi there,

How do I switch everything to wordpress? my year long subscription to hostgator including my domain name ends in april so I really I want to get out before it renews. Do I just sign up with wordpress with a plan and start from there?

I think this depends on if you want to migrate an exact copy of what you have on Hostgator, so your site is exactly the same, but on WordPress.com. If that is the case you will need to upgrade to our Business plan first, and then use the migration tool we provide for moving everything to us, which takes just a few clicks and the rest is fully automated.

The reason for this is because we do not permit uploading plugins and themes on WordPress.com (unless you have the Business plan) and your current site is using quite a few plugins such as Elementor, OptinMonster, WPForms Lite, etc. So the only way to bring all that over is to be sure you have a plan on this end that also supports plugins.

Your second option for moving here is appropriate if you plan to start a new site (new theme look and feel) and just want to make sure that your current content comes over so you don’t have to start over. In that case you can just export your pages, blog posts, uploaded media, etc. and then import here, adding that content to one of our pre-installed themes instead. That would not require an additional upgrade since I see you already have the WordPress.com Premium Plan on your account from when you were with us before, which is sufficient for importing your content.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
