Switched back to free site but no ads or cookie banner
-
Hi – please can you reinstate my site back to the full ‘free’ setting as although I have switched back from a paid plan it has not reverted back properly. Because of GDPR I would prefer to have the full ‘free’ settings with the banner, etc. and I am happy to have the ads appear as previously before I trialled the pro plan. Please can you help?
Thank you.

Hi there,
THis is probably something that you would not notice if you were not looking for them, but new sites do not always show these items by default on day one. It takes a bit of time for us to correctly classify the site before we show ads for example. To further clarify, we show the cookies banner (for GDPR compliance) on sites where we show ads, but since ads are not yet shown on your site we do not add it otherwise. More info about that here: https://wordpress.com/support/widgets/cookie-widget/#about-this-banner
I can’t say for sure when the ads/banners will be added, but if you wish you can add that manually by displaying the Cookie & Consents Banner Widget on you site as explained here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/cookie-widget/
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Hi, thanks for this, unfortunately the theme I am currently using (Livro) does not support widgets in order for me to add the Cookie & Consents banner so I will need to find a theme that does.
Thanks for your help.

Do any themes support this? I can’t seem to find any that offer the Cookie & Consents banner widget :(

Hi there,
Switching themes won’t help, as the cookie & consent banner widget is only available if you’re on the pro plan, and using WordAds.
Once ads start appearing on your free site again, the banner will start appearing to visitors again as well, but we don’t have a way to force that.
You should keep in mind that the only thing that banner gets consent for is the cookies we use to track visitors on your site for advertising purposes. If no ads appear on your site, there’s no reason for that banner to display.
The banner doesn’t cover any other cookies on your site, as all other cookies we use are required in order for us to provide our services. It means the banner also isn’t a solution for compliance with the GDPR or other laws applicable to you. It’s just one tool site owners can use to help them be compliant. See https://wordpress.com/support/widgets/cookie-widget/#important-notice
If you want to make visitors to your site aware of other cookies WordPress.com places in their browser when they visit your site, you can create your own privacy policy page, and link to the WordPress.com cookie policy from there.

Hi, thanks so much for explaining this – that’s really useful.
I had wanted the banner for GDPR compliance purposes but as you say this would not cover this anyway as there are no ads being run on the site.
I already have a privacy policy page on my site which provides links to the WordPress.com policies (cookie, privacy and privacy notice) so hopefully this is sufficient.
Many thanks again for your help and for the very helpful explanation.
