I am just so confused on how to make my site look and feel and navigate like the Maywood. I am staring at the screen just frozen. I’ve read the how to, but it just laughs at me!

Hi there,
What exactly is missing? I see a lot of content on your site, including on the front page.
Changing a theme cannot remove content from your site. But in switching to Maywood you could have selected the option to set the default Maywood front page for your site. If you did that, it would have set your existing front page to draft, but you can just re-publish that page and set it as your front page again to reverse this process.
I am just so confused on how to make my site look and feel and navigate like the Maywood.
I’m guessing you want something like the Maywood front page, correct? That’s achieved entirely by using blocks.
Go to My Site ->Pages ->Add New. You should get taken to the Page Layouts screen. Select the Home option on the left, and select the Restaurant page layout (second row, third column). That’s the layout Maywood uses for its front page.
Unrelated, but I notice most of the pages on your site are published as Private. Your entire site is already set to private, so you don’t need to set individual posts and pages as private as well. In fact, I recommend against it, as making a page private changes how it works, because private pages are actually treated as unpublished by your site. For example, you can’t set a private page as your front page.
Set your pages to Published instead, then you’ll be able to see how they’ll actually look and behave for your visitors once you set the site itself to public.

Thank you,
I panicked. I started adding content after firing off the help flare, and it slowly came together. Still trying to figure out how you scroll through the pages, I have menu, our story, recipes, and contact.
I’m just really slow at learning new hoops. I’ll read through the material againa nd see if I can get my page to scroll.
As for private settings, I am about to open this to public, and have a lot of old content marked private that I need to weed through and send to trash, clean up the place a little. I’m a horder.
One important question is, can we use these menus to make sales? Can I list prices, or is that only for upgraded accounts. I keep prpmising myself to upgrade (14 years running now).

Hi there!

Could you clarify a bit as to what you are referring to as ‘these menus?’ I’d like to understand that first before I give you an accurate answer. :)
If you were referring to your whole site in general, we have some options to collect payments from WordPress.com sites. We have listed them on this page about monetizing your site.
Please give that a read and let us know if you have more questions.
Thanks!

Thank you. Read through.
Basically I just want to list a price at the bottom of the explanations …

With the current #19 situation, we are doing order and pick-up only (we used to have a cafe, but had to close it), so we are staying alive with an online menu. On our contact page we will have a watsapp contact, and then the customer will come to pick up their order. No shipping, taxes, or other fees / costs. Order a cake or whatever, then come and pay, and take the purchase home.
This is very local, obviously. No national or international shipping, or anything like this. A 30 mile radious at best. I will include blog enteries to attract foodie followers (there are a few already).

I think I finally found my Mojo. Worked through the Maywood, set aside a draft, but working with this simplified version …
This is working for me :) One thing I did notice, though, is that the header photo for each menu is darker than the original. I tried adjusting the orig photo lighter, but still feels dark. ??
I’m starting on housecleaning today. I think I must be taking uo 40% of your servers with all the junk I have piled up.

Hey Guerro,
The issue of darker images your seeing is the Overlay which is added when using the Cover block for your header images.
If you want to adjust the overlay strength (Make it darker or lighter) click on the cover block to bring up the editing options.
After clicking the cover block, on the right-hand side of the screen you’ll see editing options, scroll down until you see the Overlay settings.
Adjust Opacity to increase or reduce the overlay strength (make it lighter or darker).
If you want to completely remove the overlay, reduce it to “0”.

Sorry to be a pain, but nervous to make a mistake on adding pricing …

I’m cleaning house and dumping photos and unused pages, and ready to make this menu public. Just want to make sure it’s okay to make this menu live, with pricing and a contact.

Since you’re not setting up an eCommerce store, you would just need to add the “prices” as text where you want them. From your page example, you would just need to type a price after each cake:
BLACKBERRY CAKE ($XXX) CHOCOLATE-CHILLI-ORANGE CAKE ($XXX) TIRAMISU CAKE ($XXX)…and so on.
If everything runs through your Whatsapp contact and no payment is made online, you should be fine.

We plan to do something more eCommerce-ish as soon as things get closer to normal. Just press the item, goes to the basket. We lost our cafe already, so have to take careful babysteps for now,
I don’t suppose WP will have payment cards someday, like Amazon, etc.? After a few hacks, we are a little skittish with online money. That can really ruin your day.
-
We don’t have any plans to have our own payment cards, no.
But on our Premium Plan you can add a Pay with PayPal block. This block lets you create a nice-looking product listing, with a price and secure payment button. You can then combine that with a contact form to accept orders.
Payments are processed through PayPal, which is one of the best-known and a very trusted payment processor for online debit and credit card payments.
As long as you make sure your WordPress.com, PayPal and email accounts are secured with a strong password and two-step authentication, the chance of a hacker causing trouble is incredibly small :)
