Switching Adminstator/Owner

Greeting,
We’re trying to switch the main name on the account–we run a website that’s part of an organization. The previously leader is stepping down and we want to change his standing to just a contributor instead of an administrator. Both of us have going into the WP Admin to change his status and we both get met with messages that say it cannot be done. How do we fix this?

I understand the confusion. The process is a little tricky. A change of ownership of a WordPress.com site can only be done by the site owner transferring the site to another account. See the Transferring a Site to Another WordPress.com Account support page for relevant information and instructions. Upon completion of the transfer, the recipient of the transfer becomes the site owner/adminstrator.
The previous owner may then be added as a contributor, by invitation.

We’re trying to switch the main name on the account.
It’s not possible to change an account’s username to existing username or to change an account email address to an email address associated with another account, respectively. Instead, transferring the site to a different account, as described above, is the way to transfer ownership.

Following up on the modlook tag for this thread. @musicdoc1 is correct — ownership of the site will need to be transferred to the other person’s account with these steps:

Once ownership of the site has been successfully transferred to their account, it should be possible to change the previous owner’s user role or remove them from the site completely if that would be preferred.
