switching domain names

I need to change my domain name from my existing wordpress name to another name. I want to close out the existing site and re-establish with my new name, that doesn’t use “wordpress” in the title.
Can I do this? And if so, how do I get my existing traffic re-directed to the new site?

The order you propose is not the correct way to go. If you first purchase a domain name and domain mapping then you will find that your visitors to the wordpress.com root site will be seamlessly redirected to the new site.
If you choose to proceed as you have outlined above then all the links in the blog will be “broken” and there traffic will have to scramble about using search engines to find your new site. That’s why there is domain mapping ie. to provide seamless redirection instead of broken links and confusion.
