switching from my self-hosted account back to wordpress.com

  • Unknown's avatar

I want to close my self-hosted account and use wordpress.com. I found instructions for importing my articles but should I open a new .com account or use the one I have? I cancelled that one but it’s still there. However some of the articles are there as well. What will happen when I import all those articles on top of the existing ones?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

You can use your existing WordPress.com site if you want to. If you import articles that appear on the WordPress.com site already, the importer should just skip them, provided you haven’t edited them significantly while they were on your self-hosted site.

Alternatively I can also empty the WordPress.com site for you before you import. But please note that if I empty the site there will be no way at all to restore that content again, so please confirm the URL of the site if you want me to do that, and only do it if you are very sure you have the content safely backed up on your self-hosted site.

But as I said, the importer should not duplicate any content on your site, so I’d just try the import without emptying first.

Thanks for your reply. I probably should have waited but I went ahead and imported my self-hosted site. I need to spend more time checking it out but it seems to be working. In the process I also bought the upgrade for a ‘blog’ domain, which I don’t think I need. I didn’t know at the time that I could import my own domain. My only concern now is that I might have fragments of old stuff out there that I’m not aware of. I changed the name servers to point to WordPress.com and I made my imported domain my primary domain, so hopefully that will take care of it. Am I missing anything?

Okay, I see that the blog domain is the one that comes up when I type my address.

  • I can still cancel and refund hammy64000.blog for you provided we do it today, so please confirm if you are sure you no longer want that domain.

You can control which domain is visible when you view your site by changing the Primary Domain on My Site ->Domains. So you can make your .com domain the primary instead of the .blog.

My only concern now is that I might have fragments of old stuff out there that I’m not aware of.

The biggest risk is that all the images were not migrated across before you switched the domain to us. In that case you’ll need to manually re-upload the images.

And just to be on the safe side, it would be a good idea to just get a full database backup from your old hosting provider. That file can’t be imported here, but you can import it to a different self-hosted site should you ever need to after the current site has been deleted (which will happen once you cancel your hosting/your hosting account expires.)
