Switching from upgrades to a plan – what's the process?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi WordPress peeps

I’m looking at switching to a plan for the first time.

I’ve got the following existing upgrades:
    – Domain registration
    – No ads
    – Custom design
    – Some extra space

A personal plan should do the job.

So, how do I go about this?
Do I subscribe to the plan then remove the upgrades?
Or are existing upgrades automatically incorporated into the plan?
    Or is it something else?
Do you see what I’m getting at?
I’ve had a little look around but haven’t been able to get an answer.

    Hope you can help! Cheers

  • Hi there,

I’ve got the following existing upgrades:
    – Domain registration
    – No ads
    – Custom design
    – Some extra space

If you need all of these features for your site, you need the Premium plan since a custom design function is included only in the Premium and Business.

I think simply you can go ahead with subscribing to paid plans. However, I’m not familiar with those upgrades which are separated from a paid plan. Therefore, you can wait for a response from staffs just in case.

This thread is being flagged for staffs. Please wait for a moment patiently.

    Thanks :)

  • Thanks @hacchism :)

@arthurgeoffrey actually Personal doesn’t include some of those things, so by the time you bought that and kept all of the individual upgrades (and I’m not sure that’s possible, actually) you’d be paying more than you would for Premium.

Have you thought about just upgrading to Premium? It covers all of the features you’ve listed and more.

@arthurgeoffrey The cost difference between those (hopefully still current) individual upgrades and the Premium plan is negligible really (something like $7/year if I remember the previous upgrade costs correctly and if you had the 10GB space upgrade).

I’m sure Staff will correct me, but if those grandfathered individual upgrades are still current, you should see your Premium plan discounted for the first year on your Dashboard>Plans page at https://wordpress.com/plans/ and could simply upgrade from there.

Okay, so Personal vs Premium is another question – my question is simply about the process within WordPress dashboard. Are there specific steps I should follow, eg cancelling the upgrades first? Or does it not matter? Has anyone done this before? My main concern is just keeping the domain.

I hope that answered your question. :)

If you prefer to wait for Staff confirmation of that, you can add the MODLOOK tag to this forum thread’s Tags section in the sidebar.

  • Hi there,

@justjennifer is correct. If you purchase Premium you will receive a one-time discount for the upgrades already on the site, Premium will be added, and the existing upgrades will be removed automatically. Any custom CSS you have on the site should keep working unaffected.

While the Premium Plan includes use of all Premium Themes, the themes you’ve already bought will still stay in your account so you’ll be able to keep on using them even if you later cancel the plan. But the custom design and no ads upgrades will be removed completely, so should you ever cancel the plan in future, you’ll lose those features.

I took the Personal plan because I’m pretty sure I don’t need the extra CSS anymore

You’re welcome. If you find otherwise, you can also upgrade to Premium and only pay the difference between the two plans.

Let us know if you need anything else.

  • I checked your account to make sure everything worked as it should, and I see that Custom Design wasn’t removed, as it’s not part of the Personal Plan. So you still have the option of renewing that existing upgrade at $30 a year, but if you cancel or let it expire upgrading to Premium will be the only way to get it back. The Custom Design upgrade currently has autorenew enabled so it should renew around the middle of January next year.

I also just want to make sure you know that your domain, meetjesusatuni.com, was linked up with the plan, so that domain will now renew with the plan each year. Your other domain, arthurandtamie.com, still needs to be renewed separately if you want to keep it. That domain is not currently set to autorenew.
