Switching from website (wordpress.org) to blog (wordpress.com)?
-
I have a website that I am currently revamping: http://www.whensomethingswrong.com/ I am NOT a website developer or designer, and most consider me to be tech challenged. :-)
I do have two blogs that I have enjoyed playing with the last year: http://tinascocina.com/ and http://whispersfromthefather.me/
I am thinking it may serve my purposes better to switch my website from wordpress.org to a blog on wordpress.com. I will be changing much of the content….I have already started to play with that….
Thoughts? And how do I do that and keep the same URL? I’d be happy to buy a theme and work from there….but what steps do I take?

Moving from WordPress.org http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-from-wordpress-org
The subscription for domain mapping an existing domain is $13.00 per year and per blog.
You need to have an underlying .wordpress.com blog URL to domain map from to the domain URL.
You must be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog and purchase upgrades for it.
If you would like to use your domain name purchased elsewhere and map from your free hosted wordpress.com blog to it, then you will first need to set up domain mapping by following these steps. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
After you make the domain mapping purchase here > Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades and do the primary blog set up it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

Hello timethief~ Thank you for your response.
I did read the first link in your first post.
I also read the first link in your second post.
As I was going through the steps of setting up a WP.com blog, it recognized that this http://www.whensomethingswrong.com/ was already taken. When I identified myself as the owner of that domain, I was asked if I wanted to domain map. I said yes, but have not yet progressed further (eg. spent the $18.00 to buy the blog address)
I was wondering if I needed to contact Blue Host, the server of my website, as indicated here first: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/#how-to-change-your-name-servers (I think you referred to this link too).
I figured they might tell me that after I bought the blog address, but I wasn’t sure, and was waiting for some answers from the support forum.
It seems, like after watching the video again on the domain mapping support page, that I will need to take that step of contacting my name servers. And, I am assuming from what you said, that I should purchase the WP.com blog address first.
If anything different, please let me know. :-) Thanks.

Also, for whoever helps me, I won’t be keeping much of the content of my website. I just want that web address for the blog that I will create.
Thanks,

We have self-hosted hosting recommendations at the following link if you are interested.
To point the domain you registered at WordPress.com to another server (hosting service), please follow the instructions here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/change-name-servers/#changing-domain-name-serversNote you will need to obtain the name server values from your current host. You should be able to find them on their support documentation, or contact them and ask for the information. (Name servers may be referred as “nameservers” or “NS records” instead.)
This guide explains how to transfer the domain name to another registrar.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/domain-management/#transfer-to-another-registrarHope this helps – let us know if you have any more questions!

Hi Kardotim~ I think you misunderstood me. My website: http://www.whensomethingswrong.com/ is currently hosted at WP.org. I want to bring it over to WP.com and make it more of a blog (using the theme Bouquet). I don’t want to keep the content of the website, just the domain. Please read my post above on the 30th and let me know in what order I should take what steps.
I don’t want to lose that domain name. Thanks! :-)

I see. Note that we currently don’t take incoming domain transfers, but you can map existing domains at Store > Domains on your blog’s dashboard and follow the steps there.
Let us know if you need any help.

Since I am new to blogging, websites, etc. I don’t know what you mean by “we currently don’t take incoming domain transers.”
I will try to set up a new blog at WP.com (Bouquet theme). I want it to use my existing domain http://www.whensomethingswrong.com/ .
It seems like these are the steps I need to try to follow: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/#how-to-change-your-name-servers
If that is not correct, let me know. Otherwise, I will try this later today and see what happens.
Thanks,

Question: It looks like I would have to continuing paying Bluehost an annual fee to keep that domain (maybe that’s what you mean by “we currently don’t take incoming domain transfers”)….then what would my annual fees be to WP.com for my new blog (bouquet theme with the custom upgrade) using that domain?
I’m wondering if I shouldn’t just cancel that domain and set up a new one that is similar, but I think some people still go to that web address….
Thanks,
Tina -
You can keep the domain registered at Bluehost and map it to your blog at WordPress.com. First enter the domain at: https://whispersfromthefather.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains Here you will purchase the domain mapping upgrade which allows you to map existing domains to your WordPress.com blog.
For more information, please visit the help documentation provided by the registrar and our support page:

Hi Kardotim~ Whispers From the Father (that you mentioned above) is not involved in what I’m trying to do. That blog is fine. So is this blog: http://tinascocina.com/ I want those blogs to stay as they are.
I want to start a new blog at WP.com but use my existing domain: http://www.whensomethingswrong.com/
So, it seems that I must (1) sign up for a new blog at WP.com here: https://signup.wordpress.com/signup/
When it asks if I own the domain and want to map it I answer “yes.” Then I assume it will tell me what to do, or I will also follow the instructions here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
If I understand things correctly, this means I will continue to pay Blue Host an annual fee for registering the domain. I will pay WP.com $13.00 per year to map it. I will then have a blog at WP.com with this web address: http://www.whensomethingswrong.com/ Correct?
I will pay at the time I sign up for a new blog whatever the theme costs and the custom upgrade. Will I have any other yearly fees from WP.com? It looks like I will also be paying $99.00 per year for the custom upgrade. If this is the case, then I may not want to use that web address as I will be paying twice what I’m paying now. I might just cancel the old web address and go from there…..
If you have any other thoughts please let me know….
Thanks,

The $99 Premium Upgrade includes a domain mapping upgrade: http://store.wordpress.com/premium-upgrades/pro-bundle/
If you just want the Custom Design upgrade instead of the Premium Upgrade (which also includes Custom Design), you can just have that upgrade: http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/
Let me know if you need any further assistance.

I have a similar situation. I’ve had a WordPress.org blog for 2 years (adventuresofpolly.com).
– – My webhost is BlueHost.
– – My domain name is registered through NameCheap.com.I want to switch hosting to WordPress.com rather than continuing to pay BlueHost. How do I do that?
