Switching from wix

Hi all. I have a domain already and my website that I made myself on wix, someone has suggested to improve my SEO I move over to WordPress. On the first sign up page it gives me two options 1 – transfer domain away from current registrar or 2 – map my domain without moving it from current. I don’t know which I should use. I need my current website to continue to function while I make a new WordPress one – then I was hoping to move it across and keep same website name. Any advice please ?

  • Hi there,

You can create a new WordPress.com site without transferring or mapping your domain right away.

All sites on WordPress.com get a free WordPress.com or .blog subdomain when the site is created, that functions just like any regular subdomain, and your site is fully online and accessible at that subdomain (provided you set it to public).

So you can experiment and build your site at that free address, import your content from Wix, even upgrade the site while still using the free address, and only switch the domain over to us once you’re ready.

Whether you map or transfer is completely up to you – do you prefer to have your domain at one provider and your site at another? Map. Do you prefer to have both in the same place? Transfer.
