Switching from wordpress.com to wordpress.org

    Hi,

I registered my wordpress.com blog dropofwhimsy.wordpress.com a few weeks ago, and this morning I upgraded to dropofwhimsy.com from my dashboard. I realised too late that I was on wordpress.com and not wordpress.org. So now, despite having paid hosting for dropofwhimsy.com, and having installed the wordpress software to that domain, I’m still stuck on wordpress.com, which means I can’t upload the nice, professional theme that I bought from a third party website.

I’d like to delete my dropofwhimsy.wordpress.com blog, and to get dropofwhimsy.com off of wordpress.com. I know I bought the upgrade from here, but I should be able to take the domain name somewhere else. How can I get back the rights to modify the site I paid for?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi. First of all, I don’t recommend that you delete your __.wordpress.com. You can simply make it private or you can put a brief message there directing your visitors to your new address.

To go self-hosted (WordPress.org) you need to find a hosting provider, who will give you nameservers to enter. If you bought the domain name through WordPress.com, this is where you enter them:

Here are some more basic steps to move to WordPress.org:

I’ve been directed to change the nameservers by my Hosting provider’s support helpline. I finished just now (all the help comes at the same time!) and now I’m wauiting for it to become effective.

Hopefully after that, it’ll work, because I’ve already downloaded wordpress.org on my hosting provider’s CPanel.

Thanks so much for your help, hopefully it’ll work out.

Indeed, it’s just a matter of waiting for the new nameserver information to become effective (up to 72 hours, but usually much less). You’re welcome and good luck!

P.S. If you have any questions about your WordPress.org install after that, you can always go to http://wordpress.org/support/ where there are lots of helpful volunteers.
