Switching from WordPress.org to WordPress.com

We have been having a ton of issues with our hosting service, so we were hoping to switch over to WordPress.com. However, we have purchased a nice theme and done lots of development on the old site that we don’t want to lost. Is it possible to switch ALL of our stuff over to WordPress.com (purchasing a premium account) so that they can host the website? I have already exported and imported all of the relevant information.

In order to use any third party theme on any wordpress.COM hosted site you have to purchase a Business plan, not a premium plan. Otherwise without any upgrade you can use these themes https://wordpress.com/themes/

    Please read:
    FTP access http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/
    Blogger installed plugins http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/
Uploading Custom Themes or Third Party Themes
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/

    Business Plan http://wordpress.com/pricing

    The Business upgrade includes:
    • Google analytics
    • Footer Credit Options https://en.support.wordpress.com/footer-credits/
    • SEO Tools https://en.support.wordpress.com/seo-tools/
    • The ability to install most plugins https://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/ including woocommerce and the ability to install third party themes. https://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/#uploading-custom-themes

Premium plan upgrades and Business plan upgrades include access to all premium themes found here https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/sort/premium/ as well as all free themes found here https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/sort/free/

If and when you upgrade from Personal to Premium or from Premium to Business you pay the difference between the two plans. If you have a site with a custom domain and then upgrade to a plan, you’ll receive an automatic discount for the domain, but you will need to buy the plan using the same username account that already owns the domain.

Thank you! I will look into those resources. I am completely willing to purchase the business plan – that is not a problem at all. I understand the differences between the themes and am willing to purchase the business plan, although I don’t think that solves our predicament.

Our concern is getting all of the theme customization that we have already done on our site to transfer to WordPress. The site has been in development for years, so we are not looking to purchase a new theme or completely redo the site/theme customization.

I’m not aware of any way to do that and when we need Staff help with issues Volunteers cannot resolve like this one we type modlook into the sidebar tags on our forum threads. I did that for you. How do I get a Moderator/Staff reply for my question? https://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-help-in-the-forums/#how-do-i-get-a-moderatorstaff-reply-for-my-question Then we subscribe to this thread so we are notified when they respond. Hi huntinstitute,

Our concern is getting all of the theme customization that we have already done on our site to transfer to WordPress.

If you are using a WordPress theme, you should be able to use it on WordPress.com with the Business Plan. However, I recommend testing the theme on a staging/test site before uploading it here to make sure there are no conflicts with the following plugins: Jetpack, VaultPress and Akismet. These plugins are all included by default on WordPress.com Business Plan sites and cannot be removed or deactivated.

Our concern is getting all of the theme customization that we have already done on our site to transfer to WordPress.

Can you tell me more about what you mean by customisation. Are you referring to theme customisation or plugins being used on your existing site?

To clarify: A web developer built this site on WordPress.org. He should have used WordPress.com. We have been building the site (customizing the theme, adding 20+ pages and their formats, purchased a theme, adding plugins, etc.) for about a year. We have continued to have major hosting problems and would much rather be on WordPress.com as the site was supposed to be in the first place with WordPress hosting the site.

We do not want to have to completely redo all of the work we have done over the past year if we switch over. Ideally, we could just simply change one setting, automatically switching our host to WordPress and our account to WordPress.com, though this is obviously impossible.

Thank you everyone for your help!1

    Hi huntinstitute,

We do not want to have to completely redo all of the work we have done over the past year if we switch over.

You won’t need to start from scratch but there are certain aspects of your site that will need to be configured here. I haven’t seen your existing site, but the two main areas that will require most of your input are likely to be:

    • Uploading and configuring your theme
    • Installing the plugins you need

The content from your existing site can be exported and imported into WordPress.com. While the act of exporting and importing is a manual process, you won’t need to copy the content over page by page — this will happen automatically once the import has been started.

A web developer built this site on WordPress.org. He should have used WordPress.com.

Another option you may want to consider is the Jetpack plugin:

    Jetpack

This plugin enables you to manage your self hosted WordPress.org site from your WordPress.com account. I use the plugin on one of my sites and it means I can add new posts and pages from my WordPress.com account (rather than logging directly into my site).

If you have any questions, just let me know.
