Switching- Moving Websites

  This might be the wrong terminology so i’ll try my best.
  Our Company originally started with GoDaddy (our work emails are connected their and our original website I believe).

  Our old marketing person designed our website on wix (I’m now co-owner). I want to move this across to WordPress. Do I create a new website? Then when I’m happy with it transfer the DNS/Host/Main Server across?

  I know this may take 48hours that’s ok. I just want to make sure if I change it over first- there is still a somewhat working website or if it will just be lost in cyber space and I’ll have to start from scratch with a more stressful time limit and no reference point.

  I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

  Hi there,

  Can you tell me your domain? Then I can check how you have it set up at the moment, and give you the most accurate advice on what you need to do in that regard.

  But to start with, you can do the following:

  1) Create a new free site on WordPress.com at https://wordpress.com/start/site/

  2) Import your content from the Wix site to the new WordPress.com site. Once you create the WordPress.com site, you’ll find the importer from that site under My Site ->Tools ->Import. You can find more detailed instructions on our Wix importer here:

  3) If you want to use your own domain, you’ll need to upgrade to one of our paid plans. Then you can either leave the domain registered with GoDaddy and point it here, like it sounds you’re currently pointing it to Wix. Or you can transfer it to us completely if you prefer:

  You’ll only do this once you’re done transferring the content, and are happy with the new site on our end. So if all goes well, your site shouldn’t need to have any downtime at all during this process.

  Whether you transfer or connect the domain here, you should be able to continue using your existing email account with GoDaddy. You’ll just need to add DNS records on our end to reconnect the email account to the domain, but we can help you with that process.
