Switching my domain to a cargocollective site
-
I currently have my domain registered with wordpress although I am listed as the registrar. I want to take my domain name notfixed.com and use it for a cargo collective site. My domain is about to expire, should I renew it with wordpress and can I switch it after or should I wait till it expires and register it with go daddy or something?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You can just change where the name-servers point (your new host) and keep your registration here if you want.
DON’T let the registration expire, it takes several weeks for the domain to work through the release back into the wild where you can register it again with another registrar, during that time someone else can squat on the name and then it is gone, they can hijack the traffic etc. You can transfer it if you want but it is not required to change hosts.

how does one change the nameservers of a domain registered through WordPress.com? I’ve only seen outdated links to instructions that show what looks like WordPress 2.1 in the screenshots. Do you have instructions on how to change the domain’s nameservers? Or transfer registrars?

You’re welcome to keep your domain with us and update the nameservers to point to another hosting provider by following this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/domain-management/#update-nameservers
After 60 days from the date of purchase, renewal, or nameserver change, you may also transfer your domain to another registrar: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/domain-management/#transfer-to-another-registrar

macman, that’s exactly what i was talking about. the first link you provided me is no longer relevant. it is out of date, and there is no ‘Domain Management’ link ANYWHERE in my dashboard. can you help me with this?
-
The domain manager links will be at Upgrades -> Domain in the Dashboard of your WordPress.com blog, but I also don’t see any domain purchases listed under your WordPress.com account.
Please contact us via http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/ using the email address on the account that you purchased the domain with, and we’ll get this straightened out.

macman, I’m so sorry — I was doing this for a friend, and the domain was purchased as his user. I’ve got it taken care of now, thanks so much for your help.

Hi MacManx, thanks for your reply. A few more questions:
I wanted to make a website using indexhibit. In download with them they ask me for my:
database host
database name
database username
database password
from MySQL database. Where do I get this information from? -
Sorry no FTP access here or access to the base database. You can’t upload directly into the MySQL database. You can Import from another blog that is all.
-
If I switch my domain to a different registrar within 60 days of purchase can I switch it to something with will allow FTP access?
How would I go about doing this?
I want to make a proper website using either cargo collective or indexhibit but I need to know the FTP info for this. I would like to keep my domain name but use it for a website with either of those. -
You don’t need to switch registrars, all you have to do is point the domain nameservers at the new web host. The host should give you the nameserver information when the account is set up. It has to come from the web host.
