Switching my hosting and domain

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello, my website is AmeliaGPhotography.ca. I hired a web designer to create my website and am now in the process of managing it myself. I didn’t have access to my domain or hosting, I was told to pay my designer and he has all access. I have gained access to my domain since. I would like my hosting and my domain to be on a WordPress host if possible.

To sum up… I would like to switch over my hosting and domain for my website made with WordPress. Thank you.

  • Hi there,

First, to use the domain over with us will require an upgrade to one of our paid plans. At the moment we’re not able to accept incoming transfers for .ca domains, so you will need to keep the domain registered with your current provider, and just connect it here:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

Switching the domain to us should be the last step, only after you’ve migrated your content to us.

To move your site to us there are two options:

You can move the content only, meaning you start over design-wise with one of our themes. To do this you’ll go to Tools ->Export in your site dashboard to generate an export file. That file can then be imported to a new WordPress.com site you create in your account.

Or if you want to move your entire site, as is, with the current theme and any plugins you’re using, you should be to do that using a migration plugin like WP-All-in-One-Migration. If you want to go that route, create a new site and upgrade to the Business Plan (Business is required to use plugins or your own theme), and then you can contact our live chat team at https://wordpress.com/help/contact to walk you through the migration process using that plugin.

Let me know if you have any questions about this.
