Switching off autoformat per locale?
-
I’ve just noticed when commenting on someone else’s blog (using WP.com in Gaelic (gd)) that WP auto-formats unformatted ‘
This is a big problem in this locale because ‘ is a word character (and punctuation) in Gaelic but when used as an initial word character, it must be a left-curling apostrophe, not a right curling one. So this would be right:
‘s > ’s
‘gam > ’gam
but WP currently does
‘s > ‘s
‘gam > ‘gamIs it possible to do something in the default packages for WP in gd that switches off auto-formatting of single apostrophes?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi, akerbeltzalba!
Thanks for your feedback, as always!
I’m not very familiar with the use of grave accents, so I’m asking my French speaking colleagues for their advice. I’ll get back to you once I have more info. -
Naoko,
You’re welcome – but this has nothing to do with graves. A grave is something like à (above the letter) but this is about the ‘ when it is before another letter (not above).
It’s a bit like dakuten – normally it is written as a short like from the top left to the bottom right ゙ but imagine this was shown as ” (for example instead of だ if you saw た”) – this would look weird in Japanese.
Make more sense? Unfortunately the default font on here is not clear as to the difference between ‘ and ’.It’s actually an issue in English too, see this Wiki article.

Excuse me for my ignorance on quotation marks… thanks for helping me out here.
Our developers said this should be corrected in the WordPress core software, and they are looking into adding an exception rule for Gaelic (in a similar manner to this issue) I’ll keep you posted. -
Thanks Naoko, you’re a star!
And don’t worry, so many scripts, who can know them all! Hawaiians get very upset if it’s the OTHER way round LOL

Hi @akerbeltzalba – just a note to let you know that I’ve opened a core WP ticket a bout this in https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/31953

Thanks yoavf!
I know developers hate scope creep in bug but I read your reference to the other bug and I was wondering if it would make sense to consider the ‘okina as well which causes similar typographical headaches for Polynesian languages? The reason this crossed my mind is that a solution would most likely be locale-based so perhaps WP could save some time by ‘jumping the gun’ here and fixing it before it becomes a problem? With the resurgence of Hawaiian, it’s likely that someone will localize WP before too long.
