Switching over to WordPress
-
I have my domain with GoDaddy right now. I have my e-mail with 1and1. Could/should I switch them both over to WordPress, and if so, in what order and how?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi cwbillow,
There are two options for using an existing domain on WordPress.com:
- Domain mapping (the domain would remain registered with GoDaddy and renewed through them each year).
- Transfer the domain to us (where the domain would be renewed through us each year).
Which domain did you register through GoDaddy? I can then check where the DNS are managed and look at the best way forward, depending on which option above you wanted to choose.

Excellent, so you do have two options here.
1. Leave the domain registered where it is and map it to your WordPress.com site: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
2. Transfer the domain registration to us: https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/
Either way, you will need to set up the domain for email again, but you could keep the email with 1and1 if you wanted to: https://en.support.wordpress.com/add-email/

The domain’s location isn’t critical, especially from just a registration standpoint. The more I can get things consolidated, the better.
The e-mail though, could be a problem simply due to space. I have a 100 gig account with 1and1 for my e-mail, and that I often find isn’t enough and I have to “clean” it out.
What I ant to set up with WordPress is my blog / writing, and that would require readers being able to post questions or at least e-mail me — although a discussion board of some sort would be even better.

In that case you are definitely welcome to transfer the domain to us: https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/
Regarding the email, we don’t provide email services ourselves, but we do recommend a few. I’m unclear on their space limits though.
You can find instructions for setting up the email with our recommendations, or keeping the email with 1and1 at https://en.support.wordpress.com/add-email/ (you’ll do this after transferring the domain and setting up your site)

It seems a s I review WP’s offerings that I would need to have a Business account. Space alone would dictate that. I don’t believe I will need a Commerce account, since at least for now, that is not my objective.

Would I be able to just leave my e-mail at 1and1 for now and link it to my WordPress site?

We don’t host email, so how much space your email takes up has no bearing on what WordPress.com plan you choose. :)
You can leave your email with 1and1, or switch it to one of our recommended providers, following the steps at https://en.support.wordpress.com/add-email/ (you won’t need to do this until after the domain has been moved here)
