I checked it out and it says that all the content comes with you when you change themes. What are the steps I need to take to do this after picking out our new theme. AND is there a way to create the new site and still have the old one up and running. We are a large running race and can’t have any lapse.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, it’s true, the content stays when you change themes. You can preview a theme before you activate it to make sure it displays how you would like it to.

The steps to change your theme are in the first article above. You have to install the new theme, then preview or activate it. Keep your old theme just in case you change your mind!

To create a new site, you will need to create or register a new domain and setup WordPress there.

Here are some articles to help you with this:

Hope this helps! And remember you can get direct email support by upgrading your plan.

    Cat,

Thank you so much! You rock, amiga! That answered a lot of questions and my only concern. We have 2 websites with WP already and are looking to change both of the themes on them. I’ll start with the less popular site to get my feet wet, then tackle the super busy and important website.

    Thanks again!
    Megan

    Sounds wise!

    You’re welcome, Megan!

    @surfingmadonnarun

We provide support only for wordpress.COM hosted sites and that one is not among them. Our support docs do not apply to
    (1) local installs of wordpress.ORG software on your own server or
    (2) wordpress.ORG software installs on paid hosting, and we do not provide support for them at wordpress.COM.

Also, note that we do not provide Jetpack support https://jetpack.me/support/ for sites linked to wordpress.COM accounts with the Jetpack plugin.

You are posting to the wrong support forum.

WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

As you are referring to a site that is not hosted here, if you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG account, then click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right-hand corner of the page that opens, https://wordpress.org/support/register.php so you can post to the support forums there.
    Resetting your WordPress.ORG password http://codex.wordpress.org/Resetting_Your_Password
WordPress.org support docs are at https://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page

    @catscholz
Knowing the differences between wordpress.COm hosted blog and wordpress.ORG sites is essential to answering questions accurately here.

This is what I do before I post into any thread:

    1. Click the member link under the username to determine if there are multiple threads on the same issue and if any duplicates have been answered. If there are duplicates and multiples I tag them appropriately with Duplicate and already answered in the sidebar, so Volunteers and Staff are not going around in circles saying the same things in different threads.

    2. Confirm the site URL being referred to and verify where it is hosted. Note: I direct those with WordPress.ORG and/or Jetpack issues to the correct places for support where necessary.

    * Please do not ever provide wordpress.ORG support responses in wordpress.COM support threads. Doing that just creates confusion. We are instructed to politely redirect self-hosting wordpress.ORG bloggers with issues to the forums at http://wordpress.ORG/support
    3. Isolate the wordpress.COM issue(s). When Posts or Pages are referred to I also ask for those URLs as well as the site URL. Use both wordpress.COM tag search and Google search to locate recent, correct answers provided by Volunteers and Staff. Then so support doc searches.

    4. Compose *a relevant and helpful response that’s aimed to resolve the issue.

    5. If Staff intervention is required I tag the thread with Modlook in the sidebar for their attention and request that the blogger subscribes to the thread. https://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-help-in-the-forums/#how-do-i-get-a-moderatorstaff-reply-for-my-question

*I have answered threads here for nearly 10 years. I predate the support docs and all but one Staff member being on Support Staff, so I have a private site with hundreds of copy and paste answers that I keep updated. If you want to answer questions, you may want to have such a private site too.

    Best wishes.

Thank you so much for your guidance, @TimeThief!

My oops, @surfingmadonnarun for neglecting to check if your site was hosted by WordPress.com before sending you those articles.

    All my best,

    -Cat

You’re welcome but please note that I hate tailgating newbies and do not want to be anyone’s coach or mentor. I prefer to answer twice as many questions by not doing so. However, as Staff tend to enter only threads we tag for them with modlook, when wrong answers are posted threads can and do fall through the cracks, so we experience Volunteers find ourselves not only follow-up threads we post into and tags for Staf, but also the threads that newbie Volunteers/Staff wannbes post into as well. ARRRGGGHHHHHH!

  • Unknown's avatar

Oh great! Now it seems that I have become semi-literate but that’s not the case. I am visually challenged and I’m having a bad vision day. :(

  • Unknown's avatar

lol – I understand the needs to be as efficient as possible and for good vision!

I think I understand what you are saying about threads falling through the cracks. Maybe I should tag my posts with “volunteer?” Would that be helpful?

  • Unknown's avatar

No tagging with Volunteer would be meaningless. Staff have so much to do that there are pages of unanswered threads https://en.forums.wordpress.com/view/no-replies and they don’t train new Volunteers. Those blogger who post here to the peer support forums are taking the risk of having their threads go unanswered or having wrong answers provided by well-intended newbies.

okeedokee @timethief, thanks again for your help. I will try to be as helpful as possible without creating additional work for staff.

i.e., I will stick to answering posts within my areas of expertise and tag posts with “modlock” when I am powerless to assist.

Deep bow from one vision-impaired gal to another,

    -Cat

  • Unknown's avatar

    No don’t use “modlock”
    Use modlook

  • Unknown's avatar

omgoodness, silly silly me, modlook! that makes so much more sense!

    virtual hugs,

    -Cat
