Switching to a Paid WordPress.com Site: Domain Name

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I’m hoping to clear something up. I’d like to start on a paid person account on wordpress.com (I believe it’s the $3.99 a month one), and I have a question about domain names. With this package, would I end up with a domain name that has wordpress.com in it, or would it be just the name I choose and .com after it? For example..

    mydomainname.wordpress.com

    or

    mydomainname.com

My main reason for switching over would be to end up with the second example, so I’d like to know before I try it.

    Thanks,
    Cat

The latter is the answer but read on so you understand how this works.

    How domain mapping works
Registering an underlying .wordpress.com URL first is required for domain mapping. What domain mapping does is providing a seamless redirect to the very same content under the new domain URL when a person clicks the old URL .wordpress.com to the original content. It can take up to 72 hours for domain propagation to take place throughout the internet but it doesn’t usually take that long. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/
