Switching to a theme

    Our church website was developed by a designer who used basic WordPress and then did some customizing. He is no longer in business and I only have limited HTML knowledge and we would like to make some changes and do a little upgrading. I see there are some nice themes that are currently available and if I choose one of those will I loose any customizing the designer had put it place? Will I be able to go back to the basic look if the the theme doesn;t work? Also, will a theme be easier to navigate and change for a non html techie? Txs much.
