Switching to Blank Canvas Theme
-
My blog currently has the retired theme Bloggy. Since I’m hoping to base my freelancing business from my blog I feel I should update the theme. I see I did many edits to Bloggy the last time I updated.
I love the simple, clean lines of this theme?
Has anyone with an established blog switched to this theme? What were the challenges? Were you satisfied with the end result? Can you take payments with this theme?

Hi there,
I don’t typically recommend the blank canvas theme since it is truly a “blank canvas” that is intended for developers and experienced theme designers to use for creating custom themes. That can mean that some things that are set up on other themes can take a bit of work (and sometimes some CSS code) to get styled the way you like.
Instead I’d recommend a theme that is similarly minimal, but not so stripped down, like Zoologist: https://wordpress.com/theme/zoologist/franklywrite.com
Another good option that is similarly minimal is Arbutus: https://wordpress.com/theme/arbutus/franklywrite.com
It’s also worth noting that if you prefer a site with a main column/sidebar layout you can start with a theme like this but set a white background and san-serif fonts to make it more minimal as well: https://wordpress.com/theme/bitacora/franklywrite.com.
Can you take payments with this theme?
Yes, the payments features built into WordPress.com can work with any theme. Essentially all you need to do is use our Payments Block to create product/service entries. More info here: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/payments/
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

I appreciate the feedback. I’m not certain I want the 2 colum layout. I was consider using the header differently.
I’m currently running my freelance writing business from Facebook, but would like to use my blog instead. I will take a look at both themes.
Although I am pretty good at learning computer stuff. I think I get how to use the blocks and patterns. Not sure I want to. I’ve been playing around with it on my practice blog endoraann.WordPress.com. Hesitant switching to it.
I’m also looking into other hosting sites. I tried many before settling on WordPresx, but it has become difficult for me to use with my writing process.
I am a Mac user and although I understand the technical side, I don’t want to deal with it when I’m writing. I can copy and paste proofed projects to and from Facebook seamlessly. No reformatting.

Hi there!
Let me first say that I truly appreciate your willingness to try the new editor. It’s definitely a different experience, but one that we find many people become used to once they get the hang of it.
When it comes to mostly writing, you can focus on just writing, and the blocks will not get in your way. That’s because the Paragraph block is the default block every time you press Enter/Return key on your computer. So instead of having to insert blocks, you can just continue writing as normal.
From your other post, I understand you were having some issues with pasting into Grammarly. Have you tried the browser extension? In my experience, it works seamlessly with the Grammarly Chrome browser extension. I haven’t tried the Safari extension yet, but it’s worth giving it a try if you haven’t yet.
