Switching to self-hosted

    Hi,

I am thinking of switching to a self-hosted WP blog and using Dreamhost as the host. I already have my own Domain, but really want to have a bit more control over what I am able to add, like JavaScript and other features.

What I really want to know though, is switching over to the .org platform and using it just as simple as posting a new article via the .com method, as in the editing tools. I realise that I will have to download and install the latest WP.org software on to each machine that I wish to blog from.

I know that Dreamhost have a one-click solution to transferring the blog over to the new hosts, but I am wondering if it is advisable to have WP do it for me for the $129 fee to make sure that everything goes smoothly, as they also offer 2 weeks transition support. For ease of transition I really don’t mind spending that as my blog means a lot to me as does having it up and running again quickly without users not being able to read.

Is there anything else I should be thinking about?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Yes, the actual blogging process is almost exactly the same.

However, you’re on your own for dealing with security, upgrades, optimization, etc.

I, personally, wouldn’t pay for the transfer. If your skills are good enough to handle a WP.org blog, they’re certainly good enough to handle a simple export/import.

    Hi raincoaster,

Excellent. I really just wanted to double check before I jumped straight in with both feet.
I also take it that making regular backups of my site are also fairly simple?

Would there be any DNS issues resulting from changing hosts, as I know that it can take up to 72hrs to propagate sometimes, or would it be fairly quick?

I realise that I will have to download and install the latest WP.org software on to each machine that I wish to blog from.

You might want to rethink the move – your statement above it wrong – all you need is some sort of a browser to blog – you install no software on your computer for a WordPress.ORG install.

And yes, the DNS takes that long sometimes. There’s nothing you can do but pick a slow time to make the switch.
