Switching Website Hosts

Hello – We currently own our website domain, but are considering switching hosts. Can you please let me know what is all involved if we were to switch to our current host to WordPress? Is there any way to carry forward pieces of our current site or would be essentially be starting from scratch? Thank you! Whitney

    Howdy,

If you’re moving to a WordPress site that’s hosted elsewhere, we do have a guide that’s just for you! It’ll walk you through migrating your content, and using your domain elsewhere.

Let me know if you have any questions; I’m happy to help! :)

I’m sorry – I don’t think I phrased that correctly. Our website is currently hosted through a totally separate company (i.e., NOT WordPress), but we are considering moving it to WordPress and I’m wondering what is all involved in that? After reading the link that you sent, I’m confused as to WordPress.org vs. WordPress.com? So, I guess I now have two questions:

    1. What is the difference between the two?
    2. What is all involved in moving from our current host (not WordPress) to either WordPress.org or WordPress.com?

    Thanks!

    Whitney

    No worries :)

So, WordPress comes in two flavors:

There’s WordPress.com, which is great for folks who want to build a slick-looking website or blog with minimal fuss. This is what we provide.

And there’s the self-hosted version of the WordPress software, that you can host on a server elsewhere. It’s for those who don’t mind doing a little technical work in exchange for total control and extreme customizability.

This guide walks you through their different strengths:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

If you want to move to WordPress.com, you can have a look at the automated importers we offer:

    Import a Website

These will help you migrate all your content over to us, so long as you’re using a supported platform. Otherwise, you’d need to copy and paste your text over, or contact a developer for some assistance.

When you have a chance, I recommend you first have a look at our welcome guide here. It’ll walk you through all the WordPress.com basics. :)

Great. Thanks so much! I will look through all of these links. One other question – is the wordpress.com for businesses the $24.92 per month? I want to make sure I fully understand the total cost if we went that route.

    Thanks!

    Hi Whitney,

You’ll be billed for one year, so it’s $299. It comes out to just about $24.92 per month as you say.

Let me know if I can help!
