Switching website providers

    I am writing to ask about switching website platforms and specifically what happens to current articles that are ranking #1 on google. Will my articles remain in their position or will I expect to see a fresh start to my website. Thank you!

    Hi there,

    This depends on several things so there isn’t a simple answer.

    Can you tell me the URL of your current site, and what platform it’s built on?

    If you continue to use the same domain, and your current site uses the same URL permalink structure that we use on WordPress.com, the impact should be minimal.

    But if you also start using a new domain with the new site, or if your articles will have a new permalink structure, search engines will need to re-index your content, so there will be a temporary drop in traffic to your site from search engines. I have no idea if after re-indexing you would retain your current ranking or not, though.

    You can mitigate this to some degree by verifying your site in Google Search Console prior to making the switch, and manually submitting your site’s new sitemap there afterwards. If you end up changing domains, you can then also use that tool to notify Google of the change.
