Symbols replace apostrophes and more

  • Unknown's avatar

I searched, knowing I couldn’t be the only one, and I found this:
    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/apostrophes-appear-as-ae%E2%84%A2?replies=14#post-477462
Unfortunately, if the issue was resolved, it wasn’t reported. Also unfortunately, when I’ve written to support staff, it seems I can’t receive their answers, so I’m asking here if anyone knows how to resolve this issue.

I don’t see this phenomenon with my own blog, but I do see it in most email notifications coming from other blogs, including the WordPress blog. It’s not just with apostrophes, but also where I believe two spaces are used following punctuation such as a period. It makes the email look sloppy and it also makes for very difficult reading.

Again, does anyone here know the magic to make these anomalies disappear?

While I’m at it, is their a way to subscribe to a topic here and thus receive notification when a new post is made? That’s another thing I’ve searched for and haven’t, as yet, found. :-(

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi. I don’t have the answer to the apostrophe issue, but I just wanted to say that the answer to your last question was in the forum thread you linked to: subscribe to the “RSS Feed for this topic” (on your right).

I’ve tried RSS feeds elsewhere, and the only thing I can figure is that I’m an old lady–too old to understand how it works. It results in absolute nada for me. I use Outlook Express. Is there a setting in it, perhaps in news subscriptions? I’ve been using computers for 26 years, but I can still be a total blockhead about some of it.

In doing more research just now, it turns out I’d have to go through my browser to use RSS, which is no different from bookmarking a thread and periodically checking it, so I guess I’ll stay as I am. :-)

It’s possibly because it was pasted smart text – you know when Word auto-corrects your grammar? Sometimes it’ll auto-correct quotation marks and apostrophes too, and that doesn’t just translate to normal-looking text in some places.

I thought the same thing until I asked one person with weird symbols in her email what she was using to create her posts. She’s doing it right inside her Dashboard, not pasting it at all, so it’s a logical thought, but it doesn’t seem to be the culprit.

  • This sounds like it may require some more extensive digging.

I’ll contact you, but you probably didn’t notice above where I mentioned that, for whatever reason, I can’t seem to receive replies from support staff. Maybe it’ll work this time.

    @proshowthink
Please check ypur email spam filter as these messages often are found there.

  • Unknown's avatar

I don’t use a spam filter, so the cause remains unknown.

Your ISP will use a spam filter by default typically otherwise you would be getting tons of spam each day since 97% of email sent daily is spam.

Check the spam filter at your ISP.

I haven’t the foggiest idea of how to check my ISP’s spam filter. As far as I know, we don’t have access to it.

You could try contacting your ISP and ask them for help as their Staff do have access.

I’m sitting here laughing. Anyone who uses Time Warner’s Road Runner service knows that calling them requires sitting on hold for up to a half hour–that is, after you get through their horrible phone system. Sometimes they just tell you they have too many people on hold and to try again later. I never call them unless something is freaking me out. :-)
