Syntax theme: changing the width (using Custom Design and CSS Revisions)

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi from London. I’d appreciate your help with this problem. I’m using the ‘Syntax’ theme to learn more about CSS and web typography. Right now I’m trying to work out out how to change the width of my column of content using Custom Design.

I’m treating this as a problem-solving exercise so please be patient with me, even if you think there’s a better way to solve this problem than the way I’ve chosen — like using a different theme!

I’ve made several other changes using CSS Revisions. I’m trying to create/hack a simple, well laid out theme to use for an interview project I’ve been working on. (Current content is all bumf.)

Thanks in advance, hope you’re all having a good day,
    T

Cool! It’s neat to hear about how you’re going about learning this stuff.

Right now I’m trying to work out out how to change the width of my column of content using Custom Design.

I would use browser tools to look for width or max-width values on container HTML elements. Here’s a screencast example showing how:

When looking at your custom CSS, I noticed you are blocking ads. That is not allowed. Can you please stop doing that? :)

Aside: it’s a bit on the advanced side of things, but you can turn off any theme’s original CSS using the “Start Fresh” option under the CSS editor in the Appearance > Customize > CSS panel on any theme at WordPress.com. That option effectively let’s you turn any theme into a completely blank slate. Pretty cool!

I couldn’t help myself: when I started looking around for things to tweak the footer had to go. I will resurrect them next time I open the custom design editor (I’m at work at the moment).

(I assume that’s what you mean by ads as I am not blocking site ads as far as I am aware…)

Thanks for your tip: actually I have already tried that. Unfortunately there are many, many max-width tags, and I can’t work out which one, if any, is the ‘master’ control.

Confusingly the theme’s creators state that the width is 757px but I can’t find any instance of ‘757’ in the CSS, only max.width tags with values of 800px.

Could anyone look at my CSS and see if they can locate a master max-width/width element? Is this difficult because Syntax is a responsive theme?

Thanks so much. Here’s my CSS:

Removing the footer credits is against the WordPress.com Terms of Service. We ask that you please keep them present and readable.

I think my example will do what you described: “change the width of my column of content.” :)

Can you add it to your custom CSS and show me that it doesn’t?

With a bit more attention I have opened my ears and listened to your brilliant advice!

Thank you for taking the time to show me how to look back through nested markup to find the element I need. That’s such a useful thing to have found out; I’m really grateful.

    All the best!
    Tom

    P.S. Ads are back
