  I just tried applying Syntax theme for my free WordPress.com site and it’s working fine for me.

  Could you provide any screenshot of the error that you’re facing? This would help understand your issue better.

  Meanwhile you can visit below URL and try re-applying the theme. That could have been a temporary issue.
