Table of Contents

How to create a Table of Contents in a sidebar. Cheri’s post about driving readers to our archives is a ripper, and her quoting “Butterfly Mind”s two widgets has me drooling.
    But I don’t know how.
Am I being dense beyond belief? – should this be obvious to me?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

You have a number of different options for creating a Table of Contents, depending on what exactly you’re going for:

    1. You could create a Custom Menu and put it in a Custom Menu Widget in your sidebar. That lets you select exactly what contents you want to highlight.

    2. You could add a Recent Posts Widget to your sidebar, which would highlight the latest posts you’ve published in your blog.

    3. You could add a Top Posts & Pages Widget to your sidebar. That would highlight your most popular posts from the last 48 hours (either the ones with the most likes, or the ones with the most views).

    4. You could add an Archives Widget to your sidebar, to make it easy for visitors to get to your older posts.

Please let me know if you have any questions about those options. :)

Hello yourself, RachelMcR, and thanks very much.
I now understand that the theme I’m currently using, zBench, doesn’t allow me to do what I’d like – to create that same kind of ToC in my sidebar with a new custom menu.
So it looks as if I shall have to go searching for a theme that does …

Ah, no … hang on, M.R. … In fact, I believe I can create a custom menu specifically for a sidebar widget, yes? I’m a bit confused, sorry, Rachel …
I shall see what I can do; but …

Your theme, zBench, does support custom menus. To set up your table of contents, you can create a new custom menu under Appearance > Menus in your dashboard. You can add in all of the links for your table of contents in that new menu.

Then, you can add the custom menu widget to your sidebar. In the widget, you can select the new menu you created, and it will appear in your sidebar.

Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

I believe I’ve finally grasped what you’re telling me! Amazing! :-
Honestly, sometimes I wonder if I haven’t allowed most of my marbles to roll back out through my ears …
Thanks VERY MUCH, especially for putting up with so dumb a response.
