Table with images of most recent posts

Hi so i have a static front page to my blog (whiteyonthemoon.net) and am using a table to display linked thumbnails from the 6 most recent posts. at the moment however i have to update it manually every time a put up a new post.
Is there a way of automating this? i know i can’t edit the php but i don’t know that much about html so wondered if there was a work around?PS
I tried using archive and recent posts shortcodes but found i couldn’t format them in a way that looked aesthetically pleasing.The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there – There’s no automatic way to do exactly that, but we have a lot of themes that have a magazine-style front page layout that pull your most recent posts into a slider or other interesting display. You might check some of them out and see what you think.
