Tag and Category names
-
Hi,
It seems the tag and category names are linked. I have a Category called “Soulwinning” and a Tag called “soulwinning”. But when I update the tag or category it updates the other… I want my categories with capitals and my tags lowercase.
Is this possible?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Howdy!
They’re acting ‘linked’ because the two items are each using the same slug of ‘soulwinning’ (slugs are always lowercase.) This normally shouldn’t be possible — if you have a category called Soulwinning then create a tag called soulwinning, the tag should be given a slug of “soulwinning-2” to make sure it’s separated. Do you recall where you created each of these tags and categories so I can test and replicate this issue?
My recommendation would be to visit your Edit Tags page here…
https://thechurchinpunchbowl.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=post_tag
… and make note of the two pages which have the ‘soulwinning’ tag.
While on that Edit Tags page, delete the ‘soulwinning’ tag.
Create a new tag named ‘soulwinning’ and watch it name the slug ‘soulwinning-2.’
Add that soulwinning tag to your two posts once again.
With that separate slug, there should be no issue capitalizing the two names differently.

Thanks, so it’s just a bug that I have to sort of “undo” by recreating the tag/category so the slug is different.
Is there a way to rename the slug without deleting one of them? because then you’ll need to go back and re-categorize or re-tag all the posts with the deleted slug right?
I would have created the category under the “categories” section in “posts” and then the tag would have been created either in the “edit blog” screen whilst I was editing a post or I would have added it when “quick editing” the posts. Hope that helps you replicate the issue.

Thank you for that information. :)
I’ll continue testing the issue and report it to our developers once I find the cause.

Deleting and re-tagging is the simplest thing, and I see that you’ve already completed that. But I guess in a situation if you had lots of posts with that tag, you could avoid it by changing the tag name to a placeholder text like ‘temporary’, then view all the posts with the tag of ‘temporary’ and bulk edit them to add the tag of ‘soulwinning’ — this tag creation will create the differentiated slug we’re looking for. Then just go back to your edit Tags page and delete ‘temporary.’
