Tag not implemented on every page for Quantcast to read

Firstly, I have already reported this to Support, so am posting merely to share and help others who may be affected.

I was quite stunned at the difference between stats from WP and stats from Quantcast. While I expect variations between stats packages, mine were extreme – like a 50% variation.

I have received the following advice from Quantcast and have contacted support with the problem. It may be theme related, only time will tell.

After reviewing the numbers more closely the discrepancy with the page views may be because the tag is not on all pages of your site. We suggest contacting word press to make sure the tag is implemented properly (since they control it). For a more close measurement of the two analytic packages, the tags must be on all the same pages.

Please keep us posted on what WordPress says.

Thanks, this explains a lot. I had 1300 hits yesterday according to WordPress and only 800 according to one external counter.

Thanks Raincoaster. Glad to see I am not alone!

Is “the tag” Angela? I don’t see her on mobile themes. Should I?

  • Unknown's avatar

Angela is only for WP.com stats, so I don’t think so. Odd, she should show on mobile themes.

I don’t see her on my normal Theme at all anyway. Traction is dark, so Angela is invisible.

Could this also impact stats and ranking etc?

Google was meant to be in that sentence – darn iPad

    WordPress have responded as follows:

    Hi Robyn,

We verified that the Quantcast tag is on all pages of your site. As Quantcast mentioned in their email, traffic measurements between two service usually don’t agree because different approaches are used to assess traffic.

However, comparing your WordPress.com stats to those at Quantcast, they seem to show similar spikes (for example on March 16 with a smaller one on March 12th.

If you look at the monthly view of page views in Quantcast, it also shows your traffic increasing over the long term.

The day-to-day variability of Quantcast may be due to the differences in measurement between the two services, but we can confirm that we have their tag on all of your pages.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

    Best,

So I have forwarded this advice back to Quantcast. Will see what happens from here.

Thanks for posting that. I have both of my sites quantified and it’s good to know that Staff are placing the quantcast codes on all pages in both blogs. (I’m assuming that they wouldn’t be doing that for your blog and not for the rest of our blogs too.)

Quantcast’s response below. I think the third party cookies may be a BIG contributer, as the default setting on most browsers these days is to not allow third party cookies.

I’m marking this resolved, as there seems little else that can be done.

    Hi Robyn,

Like WordPress mentioned, the numbers will not always match up because of the type of methodologies used for measurement. For example, Quantcast uses 3rd party cookies but WordPress may not. It is always helpful to look at the trends in the data and making sure they are following the same patterns. If you go self hosted, we cannot guarantee a change. The only thing you can be sure of is that the tag is always placed in the footer, which is what WordPress has confirmed for you.

Let us know if you need anything else.

    Thank you,
