Tag Pages

  • Unknown's avatar

Before the WordPress reader was introduced, I was able to look at the “life” tag page and peruse 10 to 12 post titles at once without having to scroll, all the while being logged in.

    Then one day, something happened.

I tried to look at the page, and some exclamation point would insert itself into the address bar. I would automatically be taken to the WordPress reader every time.

For a while I tried the reader, but became ultimately dissatisfied with it. I wanted to peruse blogs 10 or 12 at a time, not 1 at a time while scrolling.

I solved the problem by being logged in on one browser, and having the tag page open on another. At first this was frustrating, but I came to terms that this was the way it would have to be.

This morning, all of the sudden, the tag page “life,” without being logged in, looks exactly the same as though it were on the reader.

This means, no matter how I try, logged in or not, I have to scroll 1 to 2 blogs at a time in order to find what I want to read.

It takes time to scroll and plus, if I have passed by too many, it makes it difficult to compare what I want to read. Worst of all, instead of drinking coffee and eating while looking over 10 to 12 blog titles in one screen, now I have to spend time scrolling 1 to 2 blogs at a time.

    Example given:

    http://en.wordpress.com/tag/life/

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    1. If you are not running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/ please try upgrading or switching first.

    2. If you are using an IE browser in compatibility mode please disable that mode. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1196-internet-explorer-compatibility-view-turn-off.html

    3. If you are running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/

    (a) Try clearing your browser’s cache http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32050

If applicable see here for instructions on how to clear the cache for Chrome and Safari on the iPad:

    Thank you,

There’s nothing wrong on my end.

WordPress changed the presentation of tag pages when not logged in.

The change had to have been sometime this morning, because yesterday it was fine.

  • Unknown's avatar

Hopefully you comprehend that in order for Staff to assist you they have to duplicate your computing environment. That’s why I asked for your specifics.

  • Unknown's avatar

    I think it’s pretty specific.

When I am not logged in, a tag page such as:

    http://en.wordpress.com/tag/life/

It looks as though I am in reader mode. It used to present 10 to 12 recently published blog posts. Now it only shows 1 or 2.

    As mentioned, I don’t think it’s a “problem.”

WordPress changed the format of recently published blog posts so that whether or not a person is logged in, it looks as though someone is using a reader.

In the past, recently published blog posts used to have their own pages. Some tags had been changed to a series of boxes that show post titles. All this is gone. Now it looks perpetually as if it’s all in constant reader mode.

Exactly what kind of device you are using to connect to the internet and to WordPress.com?

Exactly which browser (and version of it) you’re using. If you do not know check here please http://www.whatbrowser.org/

We have changed the URL structure for our Reader and some of our other pages.

    Please try this URL instead:
    http://en.wordpress.com/read/topic/life/

  • Unknown's avatar

Actually, I realized that link will work only if you’re logged in.

When I go to http://en.wordpress.com/tag/life/ when logged out, however, I see many posts under that tag. Here’s a zoomed out version of what appears:

    http://cl.ly/image/1n1l403J1g2N

If you only see a couple, my guess is that it’s your browser. Please let me know which browser and version you’re using.

    Hi jackiedana,

I’m glad I no longer feel crazy, in your admittance to having changed it.

The zoomed out version is funny because all the posts appear in a narrow strip down the center of the page.

At any rate, I hope that I articulated well enough, the notion that in being “logged out,” it still looks as though one is using a reader. It never used to be that way.

I’m getting used to it, just a little harder to make decisions about what I want to read is all. The old way was much more like a newspaper; this new way sort of resembles what happens at Tumblr. It’s fine, though. I’d still rather be at WordPress than Tumblr any day.

    Thank you

In addition, I think there is confusion about the number of posts I am seeing.

I am talking about “per screen shot.”

Of course I am getting all the posts. I am only able to see 1 maybe 2 per screen shot due to the gigantic images that appear with post titles. Even without the images, the script size is huge. Yes, I guess I could zoom out, but that looks awfully silly.

All this means is that instead of being able to see 10 posts side by side or on top of each other, like they used to be, I have to look at each post individually while scrolling. It’s inconvenient.

  • Hi there – Indeed, what you described is the intended display. Here’s what I see while logged out (not zoomed out):

    http://cl.ly/image/3Y2Z1j0g113l

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve been using the zoomed out feature for the past week, or ever since this whole thing started.

I don’t know. It is very cumbersome, makes me feel like I am looking at the bottom of the Grand Canyon for a post to read.

When it is not zoomed out, its worse. The way it all was previously was better.

Thank you, eurello, for providing the image.

  • You’re very welcome! I’m not sure I understand what’s changed – as far as I know, it’s displayed this way for some time. Is it just that you want to see more posts at once without having to scroll? We’re always interested in your feedback on the format of the Reader, even if there’s not currently any way to alter it. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

Very good, now WordPress has made it so that people can’t even look at posts without being logged in.

  • Unknown's avatar

So now that I am forced to use the reader, if I click a post, the screen goes black, resembling Gmail’s new compose box, and the post is centered in the middle of a screen. My windows screen bleeds through in the background.

An option appears that allows me to go to the original post.

  • Hi there –

Very good, now WordPress has made it so that people can’t even look at posts without being logged in.

Do you mean the Reader? If so, people have always had to be logged in to access it. They don’t have to be logged in to read your blog, however.

If you don’t mean the Reader, can you please provide more detail about this?

So now that I am forced to use the reader, if I click a post, the screen goes black, resembling Gmail’s new compose box, and the post is centered in the middle of a screen. My windows screen bleeds through in the background.

These are recent changes to the Reader. That’s how it’s intended to function now.

  • Unknown's avatar

No, I do not mean the reader.

I mean, that if I am logged out…and I go to a page that displays recent posts…then if I click one, the post no longer appears. It used to.

Now, it forces whoever is trying to view the post, to login or join WordPress.

You are a “happiness” engineer and you seem nice, so this makes it difficult to express how unhappy my WordPress experience has become; that is, without having to sound impolite. Let’s just say, it is becoming bogged down with so many detours and difficulties, it’s no small wonder why others I know gave up on it.

  • Hi there – I’m so sorry to hear that you haven’t had a good experience!

I can’t reproduce what you describe. When I log out and click on your various posts, they load normally. Could you make a screenshot of what you’re seeing, so that I can better see exactly what you’re doing? Here are instructions for how to make a screenshot: http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/

You can upload the screenshot to your blog’s Media Library and I can look at it there.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Actually, it doesn’t matter anymore.

If I am logged OUT, then the tag page does not even display recent posts anymore.

    http://en.wordpress.com/tag/life/

Remember, to reproduce this issue, you must be logged OUT.

  • Hi there – Ah, ok, thanks – I see where you’re looking now. I’ve reported this to the team working on the Reader to get some more information.
