Tag Spammer

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

After reading a recent article about ‘how many Tags should I use per post’ I see that I have been using too many Tags, obviously I’m going to correct this but I also read that this means I could be reported as a Tag Spammer? If so if I correct my Tags, how do I know if I’m no longer classed as a Tag Spammer and if I have been reported as a Tag Spammer could this of affected my traffic?

    Thanks

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If you use about 10 tags, or a combined total of 12 (tags + categories) you should be just fine and if you should start showing up on the wordpress global tags pages. Just adjust things back and you should be fine.

    Thanks,

What is the ‘wordpress global tags pages’ and were can it be found?

Also does this apply to my Cargo website? Flickr allow 75 Tags? Im confused about the consistency in the message between website to website?

I have recently found that someone is using my domain name as a Title to a book i.e Framed Ink, framed ink and framed-ink? Should I start to put these in to in effect steal back my traffic and my SEO rankings in google or does it not technically work like that?

Sorry I have just read the ‘define global tags?’ page and will digest that but my second two points:

    1. Also does this apply to my Cargo website? Flickr allow 75 Tags? Im confused about the consistency in the message between website to website?

    2. I have recently found that someone is using my domain name as a Title to a book i.e Framed Ink, framed ink and framed-ink? Should I start to put these in to in effect steal back my traffic and my SEO rankings in google or does it not technically work like that?

1 We only supply answers for WordPress.com, but you can look in their support documents.

    2) titles are not copyrighted. Using your own domain name as a category/tag will result in WordPress thinking you’re a tag spammer, so I don’t advise you do it. I use my own name from time to time only when making self-referential posts, but I do it very rarely. It is risky.

You can use many Tags here, I guess there is some upper limit at some point, the advice @thesacredpath gave you is for the max number of Tags so as to not upset search engines.

TSP is correct. There was so much opportunistic spamdexing going on here at WordPresscom years ago by bloggers who were determined to game the search engines that the software will not display posts that an excessive number of tags. Please see here >

    1. You are using too many categories or tags. You don’t want irrelevant content showing up in the tag surfer or search, and neither do we. That’s why we limit the number of tags that can be used on a public tag listing. Five to 10 tags (or categories, or a combination of the two) is a good number to add to each of your posts. The more tags you use, the less likely it is that your post will be selected for inclusion in the global tag listings. http://en.support.wordpress.com/global-tags/#missing-posts

The rule of thumbs is to use no more than the miniumum number of relevant tags required to accurately describe the contents of any post. Also note I can confirm that raincoaster’s advice in 2) above is correct.

Looks like I am going to have to get medieval on my Tags, Looks like I must be High on The Tag Spammer charts as I use my own name as a CAT and in most posts as a TAG when it is about my work!

    Hi again,

I have just been through all my Tags and cut them to 10-12 max! I have also deleted my name Framedink as a Cat but I could really do with having Framedink as a Cat the more I look at it so people can navigate straight to my work (I don’t want to use the words My Work as its a bit childish or Portfolio as its too Graphic) can I not have Framedink as a Cat?

Waste of time on your part, a Google search on “framedink” has your two sites as # 1 & # 3 – how much higher on the search page do you want to go or easier do you want to make it?

    Hi,

Its more really to do with navigation for the user who goes to my Blog i.e the Cats on the right act as a kind of guide, for example if they want to read an interview or enter a competition. I did have Framedink as a Cat but have removed it after the above advice but it was good to have as it meant that I could Cat any of my work with a Framedink Cat and it meant that it was easy to understand….

Looks like I might be a bit puzzled –

but you could have a Graphic or what ever you want on your base site – and it could say or show anything you wanted – the link associated with that could then go anywhere you want with the URL completely hidden – sort of how the “Blog” link works –

You could have a graphic on the left site that has “for my on my work” for text on it.

I personally don’t like things that are hidden too much – I like to see “for more info” not just a picture – maybe the picture is just your favorite picture of all time.

    I make any sense?
