Tag Surfer

    Hello,

The Tag Surfer (my #1 most used feature, by far) is gone. I figured we’re supposed to use the “Readomattic” instead. If I choose “Edit Subscriptions” I can see all my old tags which were used for the Tag Surfer, but when I click the “Tags” link, I get an empty list.

On the forums, it was suggested that the “Read Blogs” feature should be used instead. There [in the Read Blogs section] too I get the list of my old tags (in a list to the left), but in the main area (where I guess it should be showing a list of relevant blogs), I get the text: “Nothing to read! Why not find your friends, subscribe to some blogs, or have a look at Freshly Pressed?”.

Considering the amount of blogs I used to get when I used the old Tag Surfer function, I don’t think it’s because my tags are too narrow. (Unless the old feature OR’d the tags when searching for hits, and the new one AND’s them).

Is it correct that “Read Blogs” has replaced the old Tag Surfer? Is it normal for the list to come up empty, even though my old tags are there? Is there anything in particular one needs to do to get the same behavior as the Tag Surfer with regards to how it determines if a blog is relevant? (Because, although not perfect, the old Tag Surfer did a pretty good job).

There was a simple solution to this: It looked like all my old Tag Surfer tags had been migrated, but once I removed them and then re-added them manually, it started working like a charm.

    Sorry for the noise.

Though I’m not entirely blaming myself, because it does look like it has migrated all the tags, and when you remove one and then re-add it, there’s no visual clue to indicate if it is a new (functioning) tag, or an old (nonfunctioning) one.

(Adding new tags puts them in a new database where they need to be for the new feature?)

Scratch my last entry: I had completely missed the point of the “Read Blogs” feature, I thought it was meant to replace the Tag Surfer in the sense that it did a tag set match, rather than a feature for browsing through single tags.

The neat thing with the Tag Surfer was that it had a list of tags which it matched against and you didn’t need to manually click on each tag (which is a major inconvenience compared to the old way).

Any chance we could have the Tag Surfer feature back?

  • The Tag Surfer has been disabled but we’ll be working on making the “Read Blogs” feature better.

Thank you for the quick reply!

I don’t know the reason for disabling the Tag Surfer (I assume it could be something like a critical security problem, serious server load problems, etc), but for future reference: If applicable, consider completing the replacement before disabling a feature. I really used the Tag Surfer a lot (and I mean a lot), and I assume there are others who did as well.

Looking forward to seeing what you gals/guys do with the Read Blogs function!
