Hi, I’m trying to make some posts through emails and the tagging and categorising function don’t seem to work. I followed the instructions in here: https://wordpress.com/support/post-by-email/#specifying-categories

Could you please let me know if i’m missing anything? Thanks

    Hi there

Can you answer some questions to really understand the problem here?

Is this your first time using post by email and you haven’t been able to make tagging and categorizing work?
Or you have used this feature before but it stopped working?
Could you share the shortcode you used with the tags/categories to check if everything is alright?
Keep in mind that categories must already exist in your blog. While tags don’t need to exist and would be created if you use a new one.

    Cheers!

  • Hi there!

In your other thread, you asked if it was possible to export a file with all your categories IDs, I’m afraid that’s not possible.

It would be great, though, if you could answer @cuellin’s questions. The more we know, the better we’ll be able to advise. Thanks!

    Hello Cuellin,

I used the function in 2016 and it worked then.

I used the same code by quoting new categories that’s created today (didnt try old categories but im assuming the result would be the same. I tried the category names and ID separately and neither worked..

    Tags didnt work either.

Below are examples of my commands:

    Email1
    [category 7. General Deductions]
[tag Repaying clients’ losses from a partner’s defalcations, Quasi-personal expenses]

    Email2
    [category 731034109]
[tag theft losses and misappropriations, s.25-45 ITAA 1997]

    Thanks all for the reply

Ok, great! I can see that the shortcodes got posted as part of the content here:
    https://australiantaxlawsummary4ca.wordpress.com/category/cases-summary/7-general-deductions/

I’m going to test the categories, as I don’t see anything wrong with them.

Now, for tags you are using the word “tag” when the shortcode is “tags”. Try changing it and check if that solves that part.

    Hi there!
After some testing, I got it working.

First of all, the “tags” shortcode fixes that part.

For the categories, I copied and pasted the exact same text posted in your blog (here) and that didn’t work.
It would seem that the opening and closing brackets are different so the shortcode couldn’t be understood.
But if instead, you would copy the category shortcode from your own example above, for the same category, it worked just fine.

I would assume it could be a problem with the app used to craft the email, but test it and see if everything works out now.
It could also be an issue with the format as stated in the Post by mail guide:

Note that you will need to use an email client that supports rich text or HTML formatting in order to make use of this feature. Most email clients do support this. You may need to switch your client into rich text or formatted mode.
